Just wondering if a older automatic transmission would bolt up to a 3.0, im not concerned with having overdrive, and if a C-5 would work and be cheaper (or another older full hydraulic unit) then it might be a option to consider. Im pretty sure a a4ld would "work" but it might even be worse than the 4r44e i already have. This is in a 97 reg cab longbed, 345 gearing (which i plan on changing to 4.10's)

Manual trans from a 2WD or 4WD(what you have now) 3.0l Vulcan engine is the only option.

3.0l Vulcan has unique bolt pattern for bellhousing so not many options.

Automatics for the most part never had detachable bell housings since the main pump used the bell housing as part of its case.
And none were being made with Vulcan pattern before transmissions went electronic.

3.0l vulcan engine was first used in 1986, so A4LD

A4LD, 4R44E, 5R44E are the same transmission, A4LD was just 2 solenoid, Converter lock up and OD shift, 4R and 5R added full shift control.
(the very first A4LDs did just have Converter lockup so only 1 solenoid)

Nothing wrong with any of these, well nothing wrong that any other automatic doesn't also have wrong, lol, i.e. not a manual :)

And electronic shift control is usually not the problem in any case, partial rebuilds and poor quality parts are main reasons any automatic fails after repair.
Overheating is why they fail originally.
And you still have this with non-electronic automatics

well i hope to not have any issues, just wanted to have the best possible starting point. i am going to use a extra external cooler and run a lower rear end (4.10's instead of the 3.45's) id rather run a manual, but think im going to just keep it a auto for the time being.
