What is this inside my door?

Hey guys, so I took off my door panel the other night to change out the door handle, and I found this stuff on the inside of the door. At first I thought it was mold, but on further thought, that meant the the plastic lining would have been worse. I don't want to take it off without knowing what it is first

That looks like it might be seam sealer to me. In some areas of the body they would spray it on, in other areas it would be applied similar to caulking.

So they used seam sealer on the whole interior of the door? That seems very strange. But searching up "old seam sealer" seems to look very similar to this. Thank you for the help

agreed. Seam sealer of some sort of rust proofing. I know you're in Cali...Nevertheless that's what the inside of my doors look like.

Probably a rustproofing material sprayed on.

In more modern vehicles, some sound deadening material is sprayed on in certain areas. But I don't think they were doing that in 89.

Rustproofing sounds right. On 1st gens there was expected for some water to get in there. Hence the drain...
