What engine oil are you using?

big jim

i just dont have time for dumb shit like this.

i dont use synthetics, but its not because i think they are a scam. they are definitely a superior product to most dinos, but even modern dino has wide variance to acidification and water tolerance and water promotion furthering rapid degradation in the crankcase.

your statements only really hold true if one is properly bypass filtering.

I run 10W30 Valvoline high mileage syn blend. Works fine and I've used it in all my cars since '04.

I also use 10w-30 Fully Synthetic Valvoline motor oil.

However I don't use it just cuz its synthetic.

TRUE: Synthetic is vastly superior to conventional. BUT the superior part is only effective at ranges and stresses beyond what is achievable in a Colonge motor. These aren't race cars guys....they run just fine on conventional motor oil, b/c it provides all the operating characteristics the motor calls for. The motor was designed with this in mind.

99% of the time a typical production car cannot utilize the additional benefits that synthetic oil provides. Its a peace of mind product.

This argument is similar caliber to adding a cold air K&N intake to a Ranger motor.....the facts are there but people still want to believe the bull$heet marketing numbers that are put out by the big manufacturers to sell their products.

It is what it is, dino juice does the job just fine....if its on sale go for it. If you want to use synthetic go for it, no one is stopping you thats why we live in America and not some communist country.

Use your climate to select the best weight oil

Hello "Tims03svt".

I am in the Pacific North West, temperatures range from 25-80 normally; very rarely below 20 or higher then 80. So 10w-40 is well suited for that range, according to the oil selection chart in the manual.

I used 10w-40 petroleum based for the first 3 oil changes, then switched to Moble 1 10w-40 full sythetic. I bought both of my trucks used so I didn't experience the "breakin" but if I had I would do exactly the same as above.

I have been using Moble 1 10w-40 for 125,000 miles in the Ranger and for 80,000 miles in the Bronco II. I change the filter every 5k miles and the oil every 10k (I am not recommending that anyone differ from what the factory reccomends, that is just what I have done).

I started using Moble 1 at my mechanic freinds suggestion and having stopped yet. I use it in my motorcyles and ATV's to. The only thing I don't use it in is my lawnmower. I do use synthetic oil in my chainsaw and weekwacker but those are a different brand and for 2 stroke engines.

Jim, I would still like an answer to my question please. What did you do to research this topic?

Eveyone else thanks for your input:)

The 2007 Impala 3.5L I put synthetic oil wasn't "built" for synthetic oil yet after putting it in,the miles per gallon went from an avg of 30-31 highway to an average of 36 mpg at an average of 66 miles and hour. This is what the mileage computer said after a trip from central California to Las Vegas with 2 adults,2 kids and a trunk full of luggage. That avg of 66 miles an hour shows we wasn't driving easy, just staying with traffic sometimes we hit over 80-85 mph.

Hey guys I just got an 88 stx High Ryder with the 2.9l and it needs an oil change. I was wondering what oil and weight everyone is using? Also what spark plugs? Thanks!

Get whatever you're comfortable with using that's on sale. I used 10w-30 all year round and Autolight plugs.

Jim, I would still like an answer to my question please. What did you do to research this topic?

I have read and read everything I could find over the years. Mostly the mileage and other crappy boasts are made by the oil company hoars and by guys on forums that want to boast about almost anything..

I am quite certain there must be a machine somewhere that benefits hugely from using synthetic.. But I'm confident that our little engines hardly know the difference...if they do at all.

As for reading magazines and watching motor shows on the TV.. None would exist if they really told the truth about the products they advertise. So I always take ANY of them with a grain of salt. Specially when I know for sure they are provided the products and money on the side for even talking about the product.

I did a search and found this to be rather interesting:

Every morning you get out of the house and start your car. Almost all the cars (except the vintage ones and the ones that are modified for use in racing) have a very smooth, well engineered, well timed and accurate firing. The pistons of these cars not only keep them moving, but also add a sort of life and soul to the cars. But have your ever wondered what keeps the process and mechanism of the engine and pistons, so smooth and gentle? The answer is the excellent lubrication that is provided by automotive oils, that are present in the engines. These oils are basically of two types, synthetic oils and mineral oils. Both the types of oils are very efficient and keep the pistons well lubricated. However, both the oils have their own merits and demerits according to their characteristics and process of manufacture.

Synthetic Oil

To get to know more about the debate 'synthetic vs. mineral oil', we first need to know more about synthetic oil and mineral oil individually. The first thing that one should know about synthetic oil, is that it is an artificial chemical preparation. This oil was developed by two experts working on the same type of lubrication, in the 20th century. Dr. Hermann Zorn of the IG Farben, Germany and Dr. W.A. Zisman of the Naval Research Laboratory, United States of America, both developed the concept models of synthetic lubrication.

So now, if you ask about synthetic oil lubrication, here is the answer. Synthetic oil is basically an artificially prepared oil, that is made from a perfected process and uses highly developed and sophisticated formulae. For the people who understand chemistry, the primary synthetic oils that first appeared in USA, were polyolefin based lubrication oils. Till date, the maximum brands of synthetic oil that have been manufactured, are polyolefin based. Parallel to the brands that are based on polyolefin, many manufacturers have also come up with synthetic oil lubricants that are based on polyesters, polyglycols, non-PAO synthetics, esters, alkylated naphthalene and alkylated benzene. The mechanical and chemical engineers of these oil manufacturers, constantly strive to make better and better formulae, in order to provide an excelling lubrication that would make the car engine sing.

Mineral Oil

Now that we have summarized the concept of synthetic oil, let us have a look at mineral oil. Mineral oil is basically a by-product or variant of petroleum. Mineral oil is derived after the process of fractional distillation takes place and petroleum is split into different parts. Thus, mineral oil that is used as a lubrication, has a natural origin and is made up of alkaline and cyclic paraffin. Mineral oil is produced in huge quantities after fractional distillation. Before the innovation and commercial development of synthetic oil as a lubricant, mineral oil was predominantly used as a mechanical lubricant.

Synthetic Vs. Mineral Oil

The only basic difference between synthetic oil and mineral oil, apart from its manufacture and origin, is the molecular and particulate structure of both the lubricants. Synthetic oil being a perfected product, has a very even and uniform structuring of molecules and particulates. On the other hand, mineral oil contains uneven and less uniform molecules as compared to synthetic oil. Now, when the car, engine, piston and piston block is new, it is always advisable to use, mineral oil. The uneven molecular structure of mineral oil makes the uneven surfaces of the components and auto parts rub with each other and erode, thus making the surface even and smooth . This is very useful, as the young components of the engine get into shape and adapt to the mechanism. As the engine grows older, the components, get into shape and start running swiftly without any friction. This is where one should start using synthetic oil. This oil basically keeps the engine in shape and helps in increasing the durability of the engine.

There are several other advantages and disadvantages of synthetic oils as well as mineral oils. Going into the details is pretty difficult and also complex. The debate synthetic vs. mineral oil is almost as old as the time since they were found and is getting more and more complex day by day, due to the advancements that are being integrated in lubrication. The conclusion that which oil is better, hence still remains undecided.

Jim, I'm sorry but if your research is just what you read on the net, magazine or see on tv then your research is very poor. Not everything you read or hear is true. To start you were wrong when saying nothing says to use synthetic oil only. Yes many vehicles say to use only synthetic oil. This is because like I said before, stuff now days is engineered to use synthetic oil due to the tight clearances inside the engine and what type of material the seals are made of. Take Volkswagen for example. Eveything for the last few years says synthetic oil ONLY in the manual. This is just to make you spend more money correct? Wrong! We'll use the Tdi for example. The Tdi has a know problem for choking up the throttle body and intake manifold thus choking the intake and causing the car to run poorly. Now if you run regular mineral oil in the Tdi it slowly eats the seals out of the turbo causing this problem more often. The seals are made for synthetic oil only in this engine. Along with the engine clearances like stated before. Volkswagen recommends 5w30 in this engine. Really? In a diesel? That should be 15w40 your thinking because it's diesel. Again designed for synthetic oil.

Does synthetic oil lubricate better then mineral oil?
A dry bearing that was run in mineral oil will lock up faster then a dry bearing that was run in synthetic oil! What does this tell you? The most wear on an engine is at cold start. The flow rate per min for synthetic oil 5w30 is faster then mineral oil 5w30 at said temp. So on cold start you have better lubrication with synthetic oil then mineral oil. 10w40 mineral oil at -40 is frozen solid. Synthetic 10w40 is not and flows freely! That's a pretty cool fact!

Heat and oil!
Mineral oil breaks down due to heat and makes more deposits on engine internals then synthetic does. Why? because synthetic oil is not a mineral oil.
Synthetic oil does not break down as fast as mineral oil does thus the 10k oil changes if you want to go that long. Personaly I do not agree with this. Yes you can do this because synthetic oil is better then mineral oil. But the reason to change oil is to remove dirt and moisture from the crankcase.

Do you have less engine wear with synthetic oil?
Yes you do. Take an engine with 100k on it. Synthetic oil vs mineral oil the same weight and compair and contrast internals and get back to me. Look at how much more oil the motor uses with mineral oil then synthetic oil as well.

Jim, you said I did not do research? Don't assume that someone has not researched something. For everyone that uses synthetic oil in there 2.9 great I'm glad you do. Is it needed? No. Will it hurt? No. Will it help? Depends what your looking to gain. Less wear on start up and less of a chance spinning a bearing on a cold winter morning then yes your on the right track. Is this engine high performance? No. But an engine is an engine they are all basically the same. Synthetic oil myth or marvelous? That's up to you!

The main reasons some vehicles specify synthetic is because they either have really high oil temps (turbocharged cars, and/or cars that are meant to have the piss beaten out of them on a track, and/or cars that simply have high oil temps by design)

OR (and/or)...

They specify really long oil change intervals (OCIs), such as BMW, which specifies 15k mile oil change intervals for some models.

Synthetic isn't that necessary in our trucks unless you want to stretch your OCI out or if you're driving in extreme temps (hot OR cold). But the price of many synthetics is very competitive with conventional oils. So for about 3 extra dollars, you can get that extra peace of mind. FWIW, I use synthetic in EVERYTHING I own, even my 10 year old lawn mower.

damn lol, always a argument around here lol, in a 2.9 if ur using synthetic oil ur a fool unless ur acerage temp is below freezing at all time.

what oil is used depends on the condition of the engine and how it has been maintained, i generally tend to use whatever 10w-30 is cheap on sale, ie advance auto brand(just rebottled valvoline). 4 quarts of that and a can of Engine Restore, quiets down the 2.9s ticky lifters signifigantly. its the ONLY oil additive i ever use.

5-30 in my opinion is just a bad idea for a truck with a 2.9 the trucks have oiling issues to begin with so u wanna run a lighter weight oil? 10-30 if theres nothing wrong with ur engine, 10-40 if its seen better days

My owners manual calls for 10W-30 so that's what I use. I run Motorcraft synthetic oil and it costs around $3.50 a quart at Wal-Mart.

5w-30 is the exact same viscosity as 10w-30 when the engine is at operating temperature.
