My son didn't check the oil on the Miata he got three days ago and now the engine is knocking. He traded his wrangler for it
Ouch!

Debating on doing more than just servicing the axle to my ranger.... Prob just going to watch anime and cook dinner later.

Got the seat as clean as I could get it for the F150, couldn’t get driver’s side headrest out to put the seat cover on but this is still a big improvement over the original seat. swapped out the headliner & visors too. Put some amazon step boards on, not exactly what I wanted but much cheaper, what I wanted was the old-school traditional diamond plate running boards that would of matched the tool box but they are $300-ish. these were 170 and I applied for a amazon card just to get 30 off. they work. Next I need a grille guard.

Spent yesterday and today helping my buddy tear out my driveway and fix it, we're about halfway there. As per usual with everything in this house we've found that it was done incorrectly... the failed paved driveway was 3/4 to 1 inch thick, with about an inch of the wrong base over sand. Now it's 4 plus inches of stone which should be better.

First run of my boat for the year, went fine, few tweaks to make over the next few weeks before the first real boat trip... for one the coolant temp gauge isn't working, I thought it worked last year, I'll look into it... next is it was a couple quart's low on coolant for some reason, will see if it maintains since I topped it off. Other than that I think it sounded like a misfire near idle so I'll pull a few plugs to check the mixture and then otherwise just go over all the hose clamps and stuff.

Other than that I got most of the rest of the nails and stuff out of my burn pile, it's roughly 6" of the bottom of a 55 gallon drum, more than I thought but it is most of a camper frame and like 30 pallets and a picnic table...

Still been chipping away at the workshop project when I can between weather and other things. I made a serious error by trying to save money and use stuff I had because I’m spending a stupid amount of time notching steel to fit the round tube to reinforce the frame. Should have just bought a square tube bending die and a bunch of square tube, then all of my cuts would have been square.

Anyway, today I apparently have been voluntold to finish the sunporch for my parents so instead of spending a nice day working on the shop I’ll be in a house hanging drywall.

This was yesterday.

We were camping at the lake and I was cooking scrambled eggs for breakfast. I hear a plane fly over, it was a piston engine plane but didn't sound "normal" So I look up and can see the thing is silver and is like really moving, it clearly ain't no Cessna.

So I pull up flightaware (I am a bit of a airplane nut) to see what the heck it is.

It took me a bit to figure out what the heck a P-51 was doing in Clarinda... sure enough it was for the Glen Miller Festival. And they actually supposedly had another one there too. This one wasn't in the flier but is from the same town so I wonder if "Sweet Revenge" had an issue and they subbed "Twilight Tear" instead.

It has a rather colorful... history

Anyway that was pretty cool to see even if it was from a distance.

Drywall is up for my parents, I’ll work on taping and finishing on rainy days except for when the wood accent walls go in and the trim.

Worked on my shop some yesterday, got the door frame in and got one window frame mostly in. Almost got busted by rain that we weren’t supposed to get. I was debating trying to finish the welding on the window frame and decided I didn’t like the looks of the clouds so I stopped and started cleaning up while I waited for the steel to cool because it was getting a tarp thrown over it. Turns out I was just securing the tarp as the rain started and man did it come down for a hot minute. Can’t wait until I get this thing wrapped in metal roofing.

Supposed to get bad storms tonight, moved things around to put the truck in tbe garage, wow this takes up a lot of space! not much side clearance with the mirrors going through the doorway either.

Continued work on the shop. Progress was made but there’s still a bit to go and I need more steel.

Also, unless I misplaced a spool, I’m now low on welding wire for my little Weld-Pak. The 10# spool on the welder is halfway through its last wrap and there’s only 20# in the house for it. I thought I had three spools but I’m not seeing the third. I don’t understand these people that run out of welding wire halfway through a job. If I’m below 20# in spare for each welder I consider myself in low supply. I’d like to have a spare tank of gas for the big welder, don’t like not having options.

By your standards, I'm in woefully short supply. Only 500psi left in the tank, too.

Tonight I decided to pull the leaky tire from the big trailer... got it off and rolled it around to try to see if I could find an obvious leak location, think I did but I also noticed the cords are screwed unfortunately... conveniently I have a brand new spare so I put that on, the offset on the random wheel I put it on is like 1/4" different so the clearance is even less than normal (like 1/8", normally close but dang). Seeing a new tire tread next to the one in front of it makes me realize how much tread I've actually used! In like 10 years the trailer tires are actually almost to the wear bars!

Don't think the above post is going to stop me from patching the tire I swapped out... gotta have a spare, not that I've needed one since I put the tires on in '18 (found the date code) but if I don't have one I'd need one... Holding air but square is better than chaining up one end of an axle... I have one of the beads broken on the tire, hole identified with a screwdriver, just ran out of go before I buffed the inside so I can put a plug patch in, if you're going to do something stupid at least do it the best way you can ;)

One thing that I hate is being in the middle of a project and run out of something important to progress. When I’m in the zone working on something, I don’t like to have to walk away and do something else because I ran out of needed materials.

Fortunately for me, as long as I run out of torch or shielding gas Monday-Saturday during normal business hours, I’m no more than 15 minutes from my supplier. I also have three torch sets. I’ve already had to retrieve one of my other torch tanks to finish something after hours.

One contractor I used to help would always buy nails and screws in 1# or 5# boxes and it was a frequent occurrence to run out halfway through a job, then you couldn’t do anything until he ran out to the store and bought more. I hate inefficiency with a passion. I never dragged the bulk packs of fasteners around unless I needed to but I have little divided cases with an assortment of fasteners that I would take for small projects and such plus some plastic containers that would hold around 5# of fasteners and keep the like 50# box at home, refill my smaller containers as needed after work in the evening to be ready for the next day. Cheaper and less hassle of running to the store all the time.

I agree. But, only 45 minute round trip to my favorite welding supply house. I can cut it pretty close with no risk.
