Rattle canned my diff cover silver. It looked too plain so I taped it up, drew a spider on it and cut it out with a cheap plastic knife and shot it flat black. Yay or nay ?

I rattle canned mine with gloss black. I thought it would look stupid, but semi-gloss was out of stock. I figured the gloss isn't going to be so glossing after a few thousand miles.

here, the local autoparts stores take used oil for free. i know it doesn't help your situation but just commenting.

They do here too, but not if it is contaminated with water. As far as I know there is one place in the county where you can take contaminated oil, and that is at the dump where they have a hazardous waste disposal facility. People have to drive out there to get rid of used transmission fluid and coolant too.

I just got rid of about 60 gallons of used motor oil, antifreeze, and various other fluids that have been accumulating in my driveway for years.

loaded them into my ranger, and took them to the hazardous waist drop off the county was hosting. This was super convenient, drove up, the pulled all the bottles out of the back of my truck, and off I went.

I have the same problem, the parts houses only take clean motor oil. everything else, your SOL.

I drove it to an ewaste facility to get rid of about 20 CB radio circuit boards and 27 older desktop computers that nobody wanted. They would have been perfect for Linux, but not many people want that. On the way home noticed someone in the neighborhood who has been been poking around under the hood with a voltmeter for the last several weeks. I walked over there to see what going on. It was an intermittent no start, only in warmer weather and when the engine compartment is hot. It turned out to be the fuel pump relay. I had several used ones in the garage here that have been taking room in the junk drawer, so I brought it back over there, popped it in and now it appears to work. It was a1996 and in good condition, minus some sunburn over the years. That's to be expected on the West Coast. He bought it for $1500 last year because nobody could figure out the intermittent no start problem.

It sounds like they make it hard to get rid of things where some of you live... no wonder people have “lawn couches”.
We can bring most waste to the town transfer station (furniture, appliances, recycling, trash, etc). We can get rid of construction debris there with a permit from the town. You can get 2 per year for free... you just need to prove residency and no commercial vehicles.

As far as hazardous substances, that’s all handled by the county dept of solid waste management... I work for the county.

if people would just try linux or any of the other types of systems. i am not a computer guy, at all, and i love ubuntu. i played with damn fine linux back in the day a bit but liked ubuntu so much i only used that at home for like 10 years. its even better now because you don't have to go into wine to make things work from microsoft.

my kids didn't even know they were on a linux operating system for a few years. it did everything windows did but charge money to use it

Same. Linux (ubuntu) at home. I installed Linux Mint on my in-law's PC as they kept picking up malware (amazing what 70+ yo folks get into.) No problems since, and no complaints or questions about the OS.

I used Ubuntu on the PC I build in Highschool, because I ran out of money to before I bought an operating system. Was no good for playing games so I got rid of it as soon as I could.

It was difficult trying to play online games through wine.....

Most people want the familiarity of Windows. Anything new has somewhat of at least a small learning curve. The other issue is many people bought PCs for email, chat, and social media. These people aren't interested in another computer because they can do what they want on their phones. This leaves the people who do graphics editing, CAD, GIS, web development, etc. You will find web developers using linux, but not too many who do the rest and it isn't a problem with linux. It's people who want everything to be the same. Ubuntu is great for people who want a plug and play alternative to Windows, But, I think they implemented some restrictions that our corporate overlords have convinced Microsoft and Apple to implement in regards to digital rights management. Someone on an Ubuntu forum ran into a problem with recording his own streams on Ubuntu that wasn't occurring on other linux distribution. He was very much shut down from getting any answers in the forum because, as it was stated in the forum, what he wanted to do could allow people to capture streamed content from licensed media sources. If you don't do that, Ubuntu works fine otherwise. I have Kubuntu on one of the computers here. The amount of software I can install for free is overwhelming. Sometimes when I get bored I'll install some random distribution to see how it is. I've been thinking of installing ReactOS, which is an open source Windows clone just to see what I can do with it. I have a lot of older software that is still useful for what I want to do, but doesn't run on Windows 10. It would be nice to have something to run it on. I should try running it on the newer implementation of WINE to see what happens. Anyway, I did give away about 9 computers with Linux installed on them. The remaining computers ended up going to ewaste, and even though the materials will be recycled, it still bothers me that nobody wanted them. I'm really big on repurposing, reusing, and obsessive on recycling.

Someone should sell an anti-virus and firewall software implemented in a home router that is equivalent to what corporate networks use, but affordable enough for home users. I used to do at-home computer repairs. It turned out to be a bigger headache than it is worth. People would stuff up their computers with malware, pay me to fix it, and two days after I fixed it they would do something else to their computer and blame me for it. So, I quit doing that kind of work, as did many others. And it's not just old people. There are plenty of people in their early 20s who struggle to use much of anything on a computer that isn't in the form of a smartphone.

My Ranger has Windows. No bed linux though. The OS is a Vulcan 3.0, but it crashed and is getting replace with a GT5.0 system. the ICE has a CIA for the MAFS. and if things go right, I'll be ready to power up after the re-boot.
