What did you do to your Ranger today? (Part Deux!)

Thank you, thank you all!!! Y’all’s tech knowledge is quite impressive!

I’m not going to push any limits, but I will use this info to set up the tachs. I don’t plan on pushing these trucks hard, I have the F250 diesel and access to almost anything, but when I do have them loaded, I like a tach.

I also started to sand a little on the paint/body of both. I want to get a couple coats of paint on top so I can start locating and drilling holes for the code 3 lights, running lights, etc. I’ll pull the white cap after I jack it up from the bed and straighten the low spot (someone walked on it?), and then build the ladder rack/light bars with it on saw horses and then paint it.

Remember the 87 is a dual engine right now, the old 2.9 is in the bed. I have to strip that for the shed of miracles and dump the block.

Plan is to tap out big dents and then do a very quick body skim, nothing fancy. Remember my QC level is somewhere between using 80 grit or 100 grit for the wet sand (wet cuz I’ll be drinking beer). I have to swap the 97 RF fender. I already have it from the pullapart.

On the 87, I only have two tiny spots of rust. About 6” x 1/2” series of bubbles over the passenger rear wheel, and then a spot low on the LF fender which is from a bronco, only panel on the truck that’s not original. Doesn’t seem to be any damage underneath. I suspect the BII fender was from mudding like you guys! I do have the rust free donor truck, might swap the fender if I feel ambitious.

Q: I’m planning on grinding the rust out with a side grinder brush, rust treating it from the inside, and then denting it in a hair and then patching with resin/fiberglass. When I’m done, the Rustoleum will seal the outside and I’ll probably do the same on the inside. Remember very little rust problem down here. Thoughts?

The donor truck’s bed is intended to be the matching trailer on the HF trailer and will be painted identical. If there’s a noticeable difference, I’ll put the better bed on the truck. All of this is for my play, but when the time comes, the F250 diesel and 87 4WD will go to the kids. Everything else will be scattered to the winds with my ashes.

& I started to put together the graphics themes for both, a little sketching, fun stuff.

& finally, I also started pulling the 93 seats out for the 87. Then I realized it won’t be a straight bolt over to the 87 and I’ll probably have to modify the mounting. Well, then old age kicked in, and like Scarlett, I’ll worry about that another day....

How could a guy with a well thought out campaign slogan like this get in trouble (I still have a copy):

Oh, and I took the windshield frame off the 87, no rust surprises, and I put new wipers on the 97.

Got a little ambitious towing with the Ranger today... I got a bunch of stuff at an auction for the new shop and my brother used my F350 and big trailer to haul the tractor he got and one of the 3 shop benches I got but that left me with a 10'x10'x4' A frame gantry lengthwise on my smaller trailer and two metal benches (needed a lower COG ) and a couple hundred pounds of other stuff in the bed of the '97, in hind sight I should have used the '00 Explorer... Other than being gutless being so tall and not aerodynamic it went well, didn't have far to go...

Nothing today, replacing front bearings, installing camber adjustment and putting an led light bar and 4x6 pods tomorrow (later today?) 😂

Well with the cold snap that we're under here in the Chicago area... I knew before it was over I would be replacing at least one battery. I did mine last year... this years it's my wife's Escape that will get one. Negative seven yesterday and it was a No Go. I had to work yesterday and have to go finish up the job this morning... so I will be doing her battery this afternoon. Hopefully it gets above single digits. It doesn't look to bad... but they sure didn't make it easy. It's pretty tucked up under the cowl and requires some effort to get to it.

Why does this never happen on a nice day?

Yesterday I cleaned it off and drove it for the first time in 2 weeks. Well is snowed last night, again, so I'll be cleaning it off in a little while so I can run some arrends. At least its not sub-zero here.

Drove it to a doctors appointment yesterday and got a flat on the way. I was only a block away so I just parked it and walked the rest of the way since I was running late. Get to the doctor's and sit down for 45 minutes before being annoyed enough to ask how much longer, to which the person at the desk replies "uhhh your appointment is March 9th not February 9th...".

So... yea.... I walked back to fix the tire. There was a clip from a hitch pin sticking out of it.
Threw a plug in it and called it good.

Worked on the rock sliders. I can see the light at the end if the tunnel.

put egr housing and throttle body on, have to re-do heater hoses and by-pass valve again (3rd time for this swap). measured for driveshaft, and checked pinion angle, i'm going to need some shims. also spoke to a different tuner, who emparted some knowledge on me, and yet again more changes i need to do.
