What did you do to your Ranger today? (Part Deux!)

Truck said it was a balmy 0* F when I was out earlier. PS pump wasn't happy when I started it.

I ordered a new hubcap for my spare for ranger related news.

Was snow pretty good this morning so me and the lady spent most of the day driving around in the 4x4 on back roads trying to get stuck. Even had it in 4low a couple of times.

Really surprised how well this this drives in the snow, even with the open riffs. The cooper discoverer rtxs are nice tires for sure.

It was negative 7 when I woke up this morning... hasn't been above 0 all day.

It got up to 6 so I cleaned off my wife's car so I didn't have to do it in the morning.

I would take it i lived in Butte Montana for a year and i loved the winter. I will say its nice to be able to just go out and work in a light sweater and no gloves, however traveling to the mountain for some winter fun is a pain. I took advantage of the weather today and made custom mounting brackets so i could put the tool box on my ranger. I also did some more work on my double barrel wood stove.

Was out for Sunday morning coffee with the guys. Light rain then looked out and it's snowing hard. With in about 20 minutes we had a good inch on everything. This is central NC. We don't get that kind of stuff here....and no one knows how to drive in it.
By noon it was in the upper 40ies, sunny and all the snow was gone.
Glad you guys enjoy winter.

Oh wise ones. Question(s): Tachometers came in today for the 87 & 97. I’m not one to hotrod or push the toys too hard, but I like to have a tach on anything with a shift. What should I set the redlines at, and where should I set the shift lights?

1997 long short xlt 4.0v6 5-speed 2WD

1987 short short xlt 2.9v6 5-speed 4WD

THANKS in advance!

I'm pretty sure the computer limits rpm already. IIRC its 5200rpm with the 4.0

If it's a 4.0 SOHC, max HP is at 5,250. So, I can see the red line and the limiter being at 6,000 rpm. I never pushed mine to the rev limiter that I remember, so I can't say what rpm the limiter kicks in at. So, unless someone else has done it or is willing to do it in order to find out, it's all academic.

Ah, I dont have experience with the sohc.
Thanks for the clarification.
I've had my 4.0 ohv at the red line and it definitely has a limiter. pretty sure it's at 5200, maybe 5250.

Factory 2.9 tach

Search around on the torque peak on the 4.0 OHV, I think it is a little over 4,000 rpm. That's about where the transmission shifts if I goose it, either a little over 4,000 or a little over 5,000, not 100% sure but it's nowhere close to 6k.

This link out of the tech library says the torque peak is 2,400, but I suspect the numbers are transposed and it should be 4,200 which matches various other things I've found all over the net.

The factory tach goes to 6,000 rpms, believe me mine has never been close to that.

Just tested my 2003 4.0sohc manual. Fuel cuts off at 6250, tach ends at 6k.

side note, you can do 70mph in second gear.
