What did you do to your Ranger today? (Part Deux!)

I redid my headliner with a flannel sheet that I had and 3d printed visor clips from some flexible tpu and made brass pins for them.

this was yesterday, but i took my grandpa for one final ride in his truck. His memorial service was yesterday and i transported the urn from the funeral home to the cemetery. It was raining yesterday and well i didn't care. Didn't feel right to drive the F150

No doubt that Pappy was smiling down on you for his final ride.

So when I was stopped getting gas for the Missing Linc, a couple guys came up to check it out. One of them looked down and noticed a nail in my back tire. Boo. We all bent down to look at it. That’s when I noticed that two of the tires have got some good sized cracks along the outside edge. So I guess I’m looking for a set of tires now. I can’t complain about these tires, since they were the tires that came on the Road Ranger when I got it. I’m pretty sure I’ve gotten my moneys’ worth out of them.

I use this little truck more than all the rest of them put together, because it’s tiny and cheap to operate and easy to drive, but mostly it’s Lincoln’s favorite. He usually rides on top of the armrest, gets to see the world, and he can bark out three sides of it, whatever catches his interest.

It’s a four-wheel-drive, and it’s got about 3 inches of lift. It runs around and handles just fine for what I do now. I don’t go charging through the woods or such, but I do go off the road on construction sites occasionally, and we have the occasional couple inches of snow in Atlanta. Right now it has Goodyear Wrangler Radial 235/75/15 all-terrain OWL tires on my sexy rustoleum painted steelies.

I’m just curious what size, style and make tires you guys might put on as replacements. I’m completely happy with these, and when I looked at new tires, the exact same set would cost me about $500 installed, which was damn near the cheapest option. Cheap always works well for me. And at my age, and with my health, and no more than I drive every year, no matter what I put on it, they’re probably going to outlive me. And when I thin down my fleet, this truck will probably be the first one to go after the duplicate Town Car.

I’m curious, so with my set up and use, what tires would you guys get?

Afterthought, but I have a set of 225/75/15 white wall tires on Lincoln turbine wheels that I took off the ‘78 Continental Mark V that are in great shape, but they’re just highway tires. They are 5 x 5 bolt pattern, but I have a set of 5 x 4 1/2 to 5 x 5 wheel adapters. I’m not sure if the adapters or those turban wheels will fit over the rear hubs, and I’m pretty sure they won’t fit over the locking hubs. I might throw them on just for grins. Even though they’re thinner, with the wheel adapters, they’ll probably space out perfect just for the visual effect.

This picture is of the wheel, but the tires are white walls, not raised white letter. This is the same size wheel, but these are the wheels that I put on the Mark V. I just stood it up to see what it would look like.

Finally got our leaky transmission dipstick tube sorted out(I think). A word to the wise - Flexible trans dipsticks are very tricky to mount so you don't get some tension in the tube that will pop it out of the transmission the first chance it gets.

I made some quick handles on my mill and 3d printed some grips for them from tpu. These replace the recline handle on my exploder seats that were both broken off.
I also eliminated the seat tracks and made some brackets from 1/4" flat stock which bolt on place with the seats as far back as possible. I'm 6' 7" so leg room and head room are a biggie.
I've owned this little truck over 20 years and it's never fit me this well.

One more change for the 2025 season - battery moved from just behind the cab to the back corner of the box 'cause moving weight back always helps traction.

Also put my Maritime Motorsports Hall of Fame decal on the Ranger's doors. Proud of that one - sure is nice to be recognized for my many years as Tech Inspector, track maintenance, points championships and webmaster for Maritime Drag Racing websites.

you should get one of those Lord of the rings, Merlin capes for your pictures, the ones with the high curved collar

Yesterday I tried to unload the pallets from the back of the '97 and apparently stripped one of the linkage clips which is fun... I mean I think the tailgate is a '94 so it's had a good run :), I have a pack of the clips, luckily there's about 10" ahead of the access panel before there's a banded pallet of pallet wood that weighs about 500 pounds...

I trimmed the wings on my “fifth wheel pin” on the Road Ranger step trailer today. I also took off the upside down trailer ball, and shimmed it downwards with another lock washer, probably adding a quarter inch in height to the deck and pin assembly. On the tail of the truck, I straightened out the square tubing supporting the diamond plate deck that is being scraped by the pin assembly, and I added a couple of hold down screws to the diamond plate. Hopefully this will take care of the scraping that happens when I go around a turn when I’m going over a hump (the end of my driveway after Dunwoody “fixed it”).

I found an old, but like brand new, 225/75/15 white wall tire to replace the 235 spare on the truck with cracking in the side walls. Still has the nibs. White wall mounted in of course. I had to pay $30 for the mounting and dismounting, a little high, but I was out of time. It sits off the toolbox mount about an inch, which has me thinking I can cut an inch out of the mount and move it closer to the toolbox, so then I can see that side of the trailer with the stock mirrors as I ride down the road. Not that hard to do, but project for another day. (side note, this tire was on a Rolls-Royce wheel - story for another day - and I already have the wheel sold for $75.)

I also swapped out one of the 14 inch bullet hole spare tires with one from the tire pile. It had a slow leak.

A few weeks ago, I removed the center CB antenna, and reconnected to the twins I had behind the cab, except I disconnected the one on the passenger side. The wiring for the twins, and for the third one I put in, are both still behind the radio up between the visors. I could send and receive, but it was intermittent. I fiddled with those connectors/wires to where I wasn’t getting the antenna light coming on, and I could talk to interstate 285 about a mile and a quarter away. Well, yesterday and today I used the truck, and that red warning light comes on every time I keep the mic. 🤬 I’m planning on leaving for Carlisle tomorrow afternoon, and it’s supposed to rain all day, but hopefully I can fiddle with it and get it working. It’s a long drive to be without it.

I’m hoping to get off to Carlisle by 3 PM, arrive Thursday, and I still have to fix one of the cab over lights, touch up paint, hook up the trailer, pack, pack tools, da da da. It’s supposed to rain until noon. It will all get done one way or the other.

are you staying at Carlisle for a week or more ? the event is not this weekend , next weekend........

you know, don’t get old. It really sucks.

I was 80% sure I was leaving today, but maybe I’d have to leave tomorrow if I wasn’t ready. And yes, I was going to go this weekend instead of next weekend. I’m sure I would’ve figured it out when I actually had the parking pass in my hand.

What everybody please give me a whole lot of crap about it right now so I don’t have to live it down next weekend?
