What did you do to your Ranger today? (Part Deux!)

Everything I’ve read supports that a 7.5 will hold up to a V8 swap.

Took me a minute to figure it out. I was like, why on earth would anyone want to put a water heater in a shed, that’s just asking for water to freeze at some point… Texas. Oh. NVM.
And our shed is actually a 12x28 cabin that we framed up and made into a one bedroom apartment. It's got heat, ac, kitchen and bath in it.

I wonder what makes the choice for the rear end on the edge pick up? Mine is a five speed single cab 3.0 and I have the 4.10, I believe

Maybe yours is a XLT Edge, mine is a Base Edge. or maybe year models, mine is a 2001, yours an '04. maybe @RonD knows ...

I thought the Edge was a trim package in itself?

Like many trims I'm sure they offered different gearing options.

You can get the older Ranger Brochures here: https://www.therangerstation.com/articles/ford-ranger-brochures/

Get your year and look at the trim packages and options
In 2004 Edge 4.10 ratio was standard, 2WD or 4x4
Same in 2001 Edge
I'd have to do a little diffing, but I think I still have the window sticker from when the original owner bought the truck.
Why would someone opt for the 3.73's over the 4.10's gas mileage???

@RonD looking at the 2001 brochure, it only specifies the Edge super cab to have standard 4.10 gears. It doesn't mention the gearing in the 4x2 Regular Cab Edge

Ahh, that makes even more sense!

That is an open 8.8” with 4.10s

Not sure what makes the determination other than the 8.8” typically went in 4.0 powered trucks and the 7.5” went in everything else. Gears seem to range indiscriminately.

My 2wd 2000 extended cab Ranger XLT manual 3.0 had a 7.5” open with 3.73, I changed it to a LS 8.8 with 3.73

My 4x4 2000 extended cab (and dad’s 99 and 00 Rangers) XLT all were 4.0 auto “off-road” packaged with 8.8” and 4.10, dad’s 99 is the only one with limited slip.

88 Bronco II Eddie Bauer 4x4 was 2.9, auto, 7.5” 3.73

89 Bronco II XL was 2.9, was 2wd now 4x4, manual, 7.5” 3.08 (or maybe 3.55, would have to check). I scrapped an 86 XLT and swapped the 7.5” LS 4.10 rear and D-28 4.10 with a lock-rite in, then upgraded he front to a D-35.

92 Ranger extended cab STX 4x4 was 4.0, auto and 8.8” LS 3.73

90 Ranger (half scrapped) 4x4 was 2.3, manual with 7.5” 4.10

97 and 98 Explorers with 5.0 both had 8.8” LS 3.73

couple others around here I could check…

Interesting (maybe) side bar, my 95 F-150 XL 4x4 had 4.9, manual and 3.08, which I changed for 3.55 and it was a nice improvement

So I didn’t work on any of the RBVs, but I did work on the F-150 because Saturday night I was reminded again the back up lights don’t work when I tried to back in the driveway. So I had got the Power Probe knockoff that @Uncle Gump I think it was posted about awhile back and after watching a couple vids on how to use it (never had one before and the instructions with it suck), went to work.

Well, no power to the socket. No real surprise. Bulbs test good, again no real surprise. Fuse? Found it under the hood and it’s blown and it’s also been replaced. So… why did it blow. O2 sensor is on that circuit. Trace that wiring and it’s rubbed through where it passes a bolt. Fix that, replace the fuse, and still nothing. Pull the wires off the sensor on the transmission, got hot and ground. Replaced the sensor and we are finally in business. Put the new LED bulbs in that have been in the toolbox for the past two years for the reverse lights. Yes, they have been out that long, don’t judge me.

I bought my '00 Explorer to modify into an offroad rig in 2016, it's still stock and was my daily driver for like 3 years and 50k miles... so no judgement here... I'm sure I've had parts for projects for many years before I get to them...

Yep, me too. Lots of them. And I keep getting more...lol.

Did the exact same thing. Almost a different truck. Even got and extra 2/3 mpg on my commute to work.

Never had it on the interstate after that, but I assume it would have had a hell of a time holding 70. Didn't really like it with the 3.08s.

Well, I have projects like that around, lol. I’ve had a set of headers for a 2.9 hanging in my shed for probably at least 12 years now. They are for my 88… but I feel like ignoring the backup lights being out when you back into the driveway ALL of the time because there isn’t room to do otherwise is a little worse, lol

I had mine on the highway with 3.08, actually moved my brother pulling an enclosed 12’ U-Haul. Missed a turn at one point heading home and landed on the DC Beltway, which I was trying to avoid. Pedal buried in the floor in 4th and doing 60 and getting flipped off by kids in car seats. My exit was to the left. I was already pissing everyone off, so I just merged over. 3.55 gears made it much more useable and then the ZF-5 swap happened and it’s an entirely different truck. It will bury the speedometer (takes a minute though, lol), and I flat towed a 14’ box truck with it doing 50 and it still had more to give. I just didn’t want to go faster and have to stop fast, lol. Huge improvement over where it started

Don’t say it too loud, I’ve been eyeing more projects :icon_rofl:

Just a suggestion. You might want to consider getting the ones you have at least mostly in running order before you get more.
