What did YOU do today?

I spent the week chipping away at my workshop project. Unfortunately it’s taking longer than anticipated. But it’s going to be really nice. I have most of the frame put together, still have to do some reinforcement and finishing and stuff.
Yes, I find that my estimates of time to do a job can realistically be doubled and then add 20% to be safe.

My plans have had to change a bit with it once I started seeing how it was actually working out. Add in that I can only tolerate so much activity a day and having to cover stuff at night and that the tubing is thin and I don’t have a smaller wire for the welder so I’m often blowing holes. It’s been a challenge. The ideal would have been a square tube bending die for my tube bender and make a new frame from scratch but my budget didn’t allow for that so I’m trying to make it work with buying the minimum amount of steel and repurposing a bunch of stuff.

finished up the shed project, moved stuff around & filled it. washed the tractor & truck. found out that I need a leaf spring. Weird spot to break, looks like its been that way for a while.

Finished installing the rack for camping.

It's from googling and looking for something with a good review but inexpensive.

I ended up with this rack from another seller for 289 shipped. I just googled and found the cheapest seller.

It came out exactly how I wanted. It's below roof height and doesn't stick out past the cab sides.

Managed to find time for a little more progress on the shop. I’ve also decided that I’m making a couple changes to my plan. Going to require 3 more sheets of roofing metal to do it right but it will simply things a little and give me a tiny bit more storage space. In an 8’x12’, any extra space is a big deal. My original plan was to leave the front overhang as dead space, but I kept coming back to having to make some roof reinforcement and some other stuff that was complicating the build and leaving me a less than satisfactory result, plus a 3’ deep area wasted. That’s not ideal so adjustments are being made.

This is why I double plus add 20%... Lol

It always amazes me those people wbo get so much done every day like it's nothing. I mean, I know it's something... I suppose if I wasn't renting an apartment, I'd be out in the shop behind my house just getting 💩 done. Well, I've decided that it's time for me to be one of those people. I'm starting a business so I can work for myself. The goal is to walk away from IT as I know it, and do something else with my talents. This'll be my 5th career change in 20 years.

Good luck!

I knew this was going to be a somewhat fluid build. The rough premise was relatively straightforward and I was aware that there was going to be a number of difficulties. I had burned a bunch of brain cells trying to plan as much as possible over the winter and start collecting bits and pieces, but as usual I’m well into uncharted territory because some things worked out and some have required adapting my plan.

I’m chafing a bit about the time and money involved because I have so many other things that desperately require my attention, like fixing my green Ranger, which would make fetching materials much easier. But I’m in it now and the best thing to do is keep pressing forward because I can’t leave it like it currently sits for long, needs to be under roof ASAP. We got a patch of dry weather and I have been really tired of barely having room to stand in the shop and getting anything out often required moving stuff out of the shop or some really creative stacking.

I used to be better at making progress but some health issues slowed me down. Trying to build my tolerance back up one day at a time

NASCAR race at Michigan International Speedway.
they had a bunch of cautions and 1 red condition to repair the barrier.

Started by burning my brush pile before burns are banned for the season... then went and helped the brother in law with the headlight housing on his car which he got the wrong one since he has the HID version not the halogen version... but found out he just needs a bulb not a housing... I found the crack that let the moisture in so we'll seal that when he gets the right bulb. Then I worked on the finish mower for the tractor, I was going to change 3 of the 4 idlers (I changed 1 years ago so it's fine, there's 4) but the threads are super rusted and the bearings are still moving so they're not completely dead yet... then mowed part of the yard with it. About that time I noticed there were still cherries so I invited the neighbor over so we BS'd for a while which is good, nice people. About to get dark so I'm going to mow a bit more...
