It depends entirely on what you want to do... The only thing the Early Bronco D44 has over the D30 (in stock form) is R&P size and strength... BUT, you can get shaft's for the EB D44 with the larger joints... The D30 is high pinion, while the EB is low... Honestly, if I was going to go through the effort of a SAS, I would cut down a full-size, HP D44 (a cut down D60 doesn't make much sense to me [40"+ tires and stock width = major fender carnage/super tippy truck])... You could throw alot of money into the D30 and make it stronger than the EB D44, but then you would have spent more money than cutting a full size D44 would cost, or you can spend a little less money, have a slightly weaker axle, but the ease of an almost bolt-in affair, and no cutting...
My choices?
1.) Cut-down HP D44 - $$
2.) Built HP D30 - $$$
3.) EB LP D44 - $
Spend a little more dough for a stronger axle and a HP housing... Save money and have LP housing, and slightly weaker... Spend the most money, have about the same strength as the stock D44, and HP housing...
As for the rear axle it's a 28 spl 7.5 which is a decent axle, but I'd swap it for an Explorer 8.8" axle (preferably with discs)
