Here's my old one when it's clean and purty.

Torsion twist and Warrior shackles for a 1.5" lift and 32" tires.
Basically a Gen 1 Sport Trac is a Gen 2 Explorer with a pickup bed. Most have a bed extender which makes it about the same as a short-box Ranger. The bed is heavy plastic composite, so it won't rust or dent.
Gen 1 Tracs come with a t-case skidplate but no fuel tank plate. You can get one from Ford Accessories, I did on my old '05 Trac. The rear axle is a 31 spline 8.8", all come with a 4.0 SOHC, 99% are automatics but there is the rare 5 speed stick out there. '03-up have 4 wheel discs. The OE shocks are junk and way too soft even when new. If they haven't been replaced, that should be your first investment.
Like a late-model Ranger, they are cheap to lift a little (TT & shackles and/or bodylift) and expensive to lift a lot. Your only suspension lift options for a 4x4 are Superlift (pricey) and Dixon Bros (really pricey).
I love 'em. If you can live with the short bed, they are fantastic all-around vehicles.
