What a task...

If you need a cluster I have a couple different gen I that work far as I know.

One trick to that speedo cable is to feel for the release tab and just kinda bend the cable down and pull back.

My biggest issue is getting the loom plugs off and remembering to put the speedo cable back on.

+1 for changing all the bulbs w/long life ones.

Thanks, might take you up on one...the one I have now is the original from my first Ranger...showing 422,000 km...that and the transmission are the only original parts from what I can remember...the bulbs I replaced the old ones with are a bit brighter and I can actually see the gauges on the left side without squinting too much...not that they are that important...only concerned about the temp gauge (which doesn't quite work right) and the gas gauge (that is also a bit wonky)...but I know approximately where they should be under normal operating conditions and that's all that matters...

I will dig around this weekend to find those and let you know what I have.

OK...it might take me five months to replace it if it goes anything like the wire harness...so no rush...

I did notice that after changing out the wire harness the other day that the dash lights are a bit brighter...not sure why that would be other than a possible better connection on the solenoid for the power feed...

Getting too cold for tearing things apart and I do have to swap the motor soon...before it gets really cold...

OK, it turns out that I have 3 and they are all different.

2 are standard Gen 1 clusters with the fuel, temp etc gauges on the left and speedo on the right.

1 is a cluster w/tach on the left.

Here are the clusters with the back and part numbers to match up.

Changing these out is not a real time consuming job, Biggest challenges are the speedo cable and wiring looms, for me anyway.

Let me know what you would like to do.

Thanks

Nice collection of clusters...I like the one with the tach but not sure if I can use it...I know there is a way to hook one up...

They all have the speedo in mph which I'm going to have to check with the MOT in Ontario to find out if they are legal (they may be anal enough to say no)...

I know there is a tach test on my coil but not sure if that would be what I use to connect the tach on the dash...any idea or does it require a special feed from somewhere else?

They're also marked in klicks, blue numbers inside the white numbers.

still not legal for a canadian registered vehicle... Km/h must be the larger unit in canada

That's what I figured...even though the vehicle was built in Kentucky...lol

Still haven't made it to the MOT in my area but I will take your word for it for now...dang

All of the parts are interchangeable take out your speedo and put it in the other instrument cluster . . . easy fix. I have interchanged the gauges in some before. In fact one of those clusters has the oil pressure gauge missing. I have it in my garage as I had been diagnosing a bad idiot gauge and swapped them around sometime in the past. After all, how did they put them together??

:D

I'm sure I could take mine apart and put the speedo into it...but that could result in me having two broken clusters...lol

I'd like to wait on that for a few weeks before moving ahead...I'm moving by the end of the month and still haven't found a place so I have no idea where I will be living...and I don't like having things shipped using my old address and counting on my forwarding my address with the Post Office to actually work in my favour...

I will actually be getting a PO box to try to make my life easier, but I need to find a place before I can do that...don't like having to change addresses more than once if I can avoid it...if that makes sense...
