My credo
A legend to the old man, a hero to the child...
I want (well, need) a winch for my 01 polaris sportsman 500...

I was pretty set on a superwinch as they are a name brand and not priced like gold like a warn is.

However ive seen some other brands, traveller (tsc), viper, and a few others...

Yes i know badlands are cheap but if im stuck ass deep in a mudhole i dont want my only hope to be harbor freight.

So whats your guys opinions/experance with various winchs?

Im looking in the 2500-3000lb range and dont wanna have to remortage my house to buy one.

Rusty, there are a # of inexpensive winches on Amazon, all around the same price as the 3500 lb Badland from Harbor Freight, under $150.00. Harbor Freight 3500 runs about $135.00, and then take your 20% discount....would run you under $110.00.
If you want good, split for the Warn 3500 lb winch on Amazon, around $270.00, with free shipping. About 100 bucks more than the cheapies, but you will get what you pay for.
For many years I had a Warn mounted on the front of a 6x10 utility trailer to haul heavy stuff into it, and it never let me down.
Grumpaw.

I found the warn VX series 2500lb for about 210 IIRC. Are the Vx series as good as the standard ones?
.

I have the old HF camo 3000 pound winch from YEARS ago and it still works. They stopped selling that style years ago and switched to a cheaper one with less power and more issues. Read the reviews before buying whatever you decide. I was going to get a cheap one when they were on sale but after reading the reviews there ain't no way in hell. People say it works good if you are perfectly straight and you wind the cable correctly, if not it will put pressure on one side and literally separate the frame because they don't have bolts going across both sides of the frame to keep it from separating like that. Read the reviews!

I was planning on getting a winch next year, but had some other mods i wanted to do this winter ( 2 in lift, 27in tires and 2 in wheel spacers and new front coils)...

But im getting a smoking deal on a plow/mount setup ( 100 bucks) and i need a winch to raise it.

I just didnt wanna drop the money right now.

Kinda wondering if i can rig up a boat winch on the front rack just for plowing...a 2500lb crank winch should eaisly lift a 52 in plow shouldnt it?

Yeah itll look stupid and be kind of a pain but if it saves me 250 bucks i can deal with it for the few times ill haveta plow.

I think i made a descion....

I found a Viper midnight series 3000lb cap with synthetic rope for 160 bucks.

According to crapazon...its only 3.5/5 stars. But after reading around a bit, seems to really be a good winch for the price.

Its all steel and comes with a limited lifetime warranty. Ill give it a shot.

On an actual atv products page it got 4.8/5 stars with most mark downs due to the universal bracket not fitting their machine.

Smittybilt... I have two of them, great winches. I am not impressed with the HF winches, seen one brand new one totally destroyed... they are junk.

smitty is a good standby.

but the tsc, hf, and rural king stuff works well...

only ting i dont like about warn......they get stolen too often.

the viper is same build as smitty isnt it? i would bet you will be happy with the viper..

but everything is great untill it dont work.

I know you made up your mind already, but...

My 98 Timberwolf has a Superwinch that's been on it since '99. It's been used every year to lift the plow without an issue. Never failed.
My 2 Warn winches on my '12 Grizzly and '16 Wolverine Rspec get used a lot... never failed.

One of my riding buddies has a 4 year old Badlands... it worked the first time he used it, not the second time he tried.

Lifting a plow beats the hell out of the synthetic cable. Buy a cheap 20' tow strap with hooks on each end. Cut it in half. Unspool your cable and replace it with the tow strap for the winter. Each half should last 2-3 seasons.

I dont think im getting the plow now anyways. Its only a 48 inch and the bracket wouldny work on mine without some serious refabrication.

But im still going to buy a winch and plow in the near future. Its just to much of a damn hassle switching implements on the old farmall cub...which really doesnt push snow all that great anyways.

No, don't tell me.... Lemme guess..... You're gonna do an engine swap on the ATV, and put a 2.9 in it. Right?
A 2.9 on a 750 lb or so ATVwould be death on wheels.

2.9 would make a bad ass side by side engine.
