Okay, let's start out by saying this.... I have a 2001 4.0 4x4. I was looking through some of the pages and really didn't find any threads for this year. So, being too impatient to read through 150 pages worth of threads, if anyone would be kind enough to link me to some good ones, it'd be much appreciated.

Okay, as I said before, I did do some research as it is. But I still have some questions. #1, exhaust. I read through the sticky on headers, but didn't really find all that much. I saw hedmans on there, but I'm not exactly game for spending $700 on them... Can I just use the stock manifolds and y pipe?

Next, speedometer. I'm completely lost on this... Please, explain it to me a bit simpler so I can figure it out better.

Next, PATS. I found an 02 (or maybe 03) explorer with a 5.0 for a pretty good price. Would the PATS work from that? Is there any way I can get rid of it?

This is a new venture for me, so I'm looking for any advice I can... I'll update this as I read more into the subject, and any builds with an 01+ Ranger would be awesome. Thanks y'all!

Here is a good starting point:
http://www.therangerstation.com/tech_library/5_0_swap_in_newer_ranger.html

Speedometer needs nothing if you use a trans/transfer case that originally had a hole for a Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) or cable. The Explorers are AWD (or 2wd...) and '96,97,98 got the VSS signal from the trans.

You can use the stock Explorer manifolds and possibly mod the ypipe.

PATS can be deleted with a tune to the ECU.

For your year of truck, the stock Explorer oil filter adapter works.
Explorer 5.0 was available 1996-2001. Anything newer would have the 4.6

Read my sport Trac thread, 1st post. It will answer every question you have, even though its a sport Trac, its basically the same frame as yours up front...

Okay, thanks.

I'm thinking a little ahead on this one. Before I put the engine in I'm going to rebuild it and throw a mild cam in it just to make people look more. Lol. I saw on youtube a video.. It was either Comp or Crane Cams model 2031. I actually like it a lot. Before I throw that in, is there anything else I would have to do to make it work?

The explorer computers don't like a change in cams, they tend to run like crap. They are already HO engines, cam grind is just under an HO mustang. A good bolt on is roller pedestal roller arms but they may need taller valve covers if you go to a 1.7 but not sure if they are needed on 1.6, factory, lift. Torque monster headers open up the flow a lot but are pricey.

Research, research, research. I did a year of that before I got my hands dirty on my swap.

You can tune the computer for it, you can do it.

So what you're saying, if I tune it I can make the cam work? I may just notch the frame and reinforce it or something to make the manifolds and y pipe work... I don't really feel like investing a ton of money on top of the rebuild.

Yessir... and there's a group buy over at the Explorer Forums for the Torque Monster headers. It's good for about $80 off.

That only brings them down to $620 for them.

You can find other headers or manifolds they will work too and not cost you an and and a leg. Tech library has more info on that.

Thanks Bryan. I may put this on hold and just rebuild my 4.0 as I don't really have the time to swap it all out.

Very few headers have been found to work with the '98'+ Rangers other than stock or the TM's or custom. Some have made long tube Mustang headers work by raising the motor up over an inch and having to modifiy their steering linkage with u-joints to clear everything. There are pictures out there (or I could dig mine up). Problem with the Explorer computer is it doesn't like a LSA under 114 degs (usually). Even some of the 94-95 Mustang guys have idle problems running the "E" cam. One guy that used to be here ran a Comp Cam XE264HR-14 with no problems. Short clip of it idling.
