got a 95 4.0 4x4 went riding yesterday went through the same mudhole ive been through a bunch of times. and it was over the wheels but when i hit it it came over the hood and stalled out :bawling: towed it home took out plugs couldnt turn engine took starter off it was fine tried a breaker bar no movement at all tried rolling off no movement. oil has no water in it. but intake has some water in it i sprayed pb blast in plug holes and gonna let set today is there something im missing? it didnt knock or tick or anything like that when it happened anybody got any suggestions???:icon_confused:

well if you removed the spark plugs and it still won't move you probably bent a rod and learned a lesson.

Don't go through mud holes without a snorkel. You def bent a rod.

Your after a new engine now.

Been there done that.....twice...... You either bent or broke a rod and possibly cracked a block. Good news is, these engines are pretty easy to swap out for another

thanks for all the info that was my fear bent rod im gonna make me a snorkel now. two questions 1 what size pipe to use for a snorkel im wanting to run inside fender then out at top next to windshield. #2 is 4.0 trans bolt pattern same as 5.0??

I've been there and done that and it's probably more than a bent rod.

I can absolutely assure you that with a bit of water in the engine either a 2.9 or 4.0 can bend ONE rod sufficiently that the crank counterweight is obstructed by the wrist pin
and wrist pin bosses at the bottom of the piston.

And when that happens the engine will not turn either way until the crank is unbolted from the block.

And BTW, when you unbolt the heads and the crank from the block there is exactly ONE and ONLY one reason for disassembling the engine... to extract the single most mangled bit of engine for you to keep as a trophy.

Though stuff like the intake heads oil pan etc are probably worth saving as spares for the next engine

also there is no water or oil leaking from my block so think its cracked? i could just drop oil pan and change rod and bearings right?

A 5.0 has a different bolt pattern then a 4.0.

You obviously didn't read AllanD's post, so I'll put it up again for you and translate it

Translation to something you understand:

This is the kind of stuff you can expect to find inside the engine:

If you truly bent a rod you can expect to find severe
scoring and damage to both the cylinder wall and the crankshaft. It's over dude. I have a few trophy 4.0 parts in a pile out in my garage. It suffered a failure similar to what we think yours has experienced. None of the parts I have are as big as the one I pictures, they were the biggest ones I could find.

Plus piston/rod assemblies usually come out and go in through the TOP of the hole where the head seals it off.

your SOL, better to swap in a used motor than trying to repair your water locked one.. even if you replace the broken part, the rest the engine wont be the same..

well i posted that last part i guess right as he did i read it after i posted it sry but im gonna go to pull a part this weekend and just pickup a block use my heads maybe do some port work do they make a upper plenum spacer or anything like that? trying to find some xtra hps. but i got all my stuff today for the snorkel. thanks for all the help

by the way is there anything i need to lookout for or will any 4.0 out of explorer or ranger work?

Yeah, but I can't turn down an opportunity to post pics of blown-to-bits engines.

Make sure you do the same.

You need to make sure it's an OHV, not a SOHC. I'd shoot for a 97 engine, they are supposed to b e a little smoother.
