I agree. If you are going to do it yourself, at least drain the torque converter too.

i get it, put the key into the ignition, turn the key, and get out for however long until im going to leave. I usually let it sit there for 20 minutes on work days...just so i dont have to go out there any later...

The tree huggers are gonna love this.

Well, I really don't do a warm up during warm weather, I usually start it and give about 30 seconds then go.

NOW, during cold weather, us old timers with our carbed 2.0L motors, they don't run too good during cold weather(stock) so usually I let it Idle about 2 minutes while I get the frost/snow off the windows. When the choke is on, got to keep the revs high and be light on the pedal until the motor warms up.

You really don't need to warm up a fuel injected vehicle, just run it enough, about 10 seconds to allow good oil pressure and such. A good sized/cooled motor will be warm about a mile down the road. However if you got a small motor, it will take longer.

I assume 85_Ranger4x4 meant changing the fluid in the process. If you don't flush and just drain the pan, you're leaving most of the fluid still in the system.

my routine- turn the key roll down the windows find the radio staion, by that time its settled round 1000 rpm, then nuetral roll out the driveway, then drive, but i live in florida lol

True, but pulling off the TC every 10k miles is something I don't feel like doing... If it hasn't been changed in 100,000 miles I would totally agree with completely flushing everything out, and changing the filter, but just for routine maintenance pulling the TC is a little much for me...

You don't need to pull off the torque converter to drain it.

well spose i could chime in. here when its winter... its get in two good pumps on the gas push in the clutch crank it over and hope she goes and if she does il let kick up to high idle for about 2 mins then drop it down and let it normal idle for about 5 to heat up everything.

My old 84 with the carb. starts right up first time every time even on the -20 degree mornings but I would have to let it warm up on its own between 3 - 5 minutes before it would actually drive without stalling out.

And my new truck as with all our other cars get started up like 2 minutes before we head out in the cold of winter, and then add time while we scrape the windows. I live about 12 miles out of town so atleast the trucks get warmed up properly and the cats don't get ruined from not reaching op. tempuratures.

I have always heard that a small minute or 2 warm up before driving is ok but driving it is the only real way to properly warm up a vehicle. Only time I let my trucks idle for more than a few minutes is when I go snow boarding up in alyeska cause its like (-30 or -40 some mornings at the hostel). And block heaters/ battery blankets are pretty much standard equipment.

Get in it, turn the key, watch the gauges settle, wait to be able to see (if needed), put into gear and go on my way.
