I have a 2000 Ford Ranger XLT 3.0 5 speed. It had manual locks and windows. I’m wanting to install a remote start. I’ve installed one on my old 2005 f250 but I can’t seam to find a system made for the Ranger. Anybody know what’s a good system to get for it? What else I will need? Thanks

i don't think you will find one for a manual ranger. usually aftermarket companies don't sell for manual cars because the risk of the car being started in gear and killing someone is there, which is not an issue on an automatic.

i have looked too because my truck is the same as yours. i keep thinking of just getting one from amazon for an automatic and using it, though i just haven't done it yet

Might try and go that route I will let you know if I end up doing it and see how it goes

There are aftermarket remote starters that are manual trans compatible. Typically you have to leave the engine running (it would have to be in neutral), exit the vehicle then turn it off and lock the doors with the remote. Unless the vehicle is disturbed- i.e. a door opened, the remote will remote start it.

At least, that was typical when I left the business around 2007.

Most shops won't install one because you have to remember to leave the truck out of gear. They have to override the neutral safey switch and if it is left in gear, it is likely the vehicle will end up somewhere you don't want it, not only damaging the vehicle but whatever the vehicle runs into while the starter is cranking.

Those that will, require you sign a waiver absolving them of all liability in case you do forget to leave it out of gear. With the lawsuit happy society we live in now, I imagine finding a place willing to go the waiver route is going to be a difficult find.

And, I imagine due to the same liability concerns, not to mention a lack of market, makers of remote start systems for manual transmission equipped vehicles are few and far between.

You may have some success in the international market, where manual transmission vehicles are more popular. European countries would probably be the best place to look.

Alternatively, if you are looking for something to speed up the warming of the vehicle on cold winter days, you could go the route I did and install an engine block heater and oil pan heater like I did. The vehicle won't be warm when you go outnto scrape the ice, frost, and snow but it will warm up a lot faster once the vehicle is started. You just need to remember to plug and unplug the cords.

To mitigate the ice, frost, and snow, you can garage it or put up a car port or get a cover for the windshield if putting up a car port or putting the truck in a garage isn't an option.

i normally have remote start to cool the vehicle after work instead of warm it in the morning, ha ha ha. a carport is very nice though

My friend installed remote start on his manual transmission Ranger. It was made for an automatic but he adapted it to his truck and got in the habit of leaving the truck in neutral with the parking brake engaged.
I don't beleive a shop would install one on a manual truck because even having the customer sign a waiver wouldn't protect them from liability. In court all customers are assumed to be ignorant and innocent and shops are expected to know that they can't rely on the customers to be intelligent adults.

that last sentence is priceless, luv it. :icon_thumby:

my 2000 with auto had remote start installed 10-12 years ago, it was the wiffies daily driver then.
3 times when the remote was in my pocket I leaned on it and the truck started, once while I was under it.
I don't put that damned remote in my pocket anymore.

With my property layout, a carport is real handy in the winter to keep the frost, snow, and ice off but gets in the F¥€@ing way during the warmer months when I doing the mojority of my outside work.

I just need to finish building the right side carport so i can have some shade to work under. Its way to got to be out in the sun dehydrating. I put two fans out to move air and have a wide brim hat but you still sweat non-stop.

Shoot, at 0730, it was already 101 because of the humidity. And last night at 2100, it was still 103 because of the heat index.

And once the sun goes down, you are fighting mosquitos in attack formations so its no use waiting till sundown.

I have installed alarms since 1997. The only brand I would recommend is a DEI product, such as Viper, Clifford, and Avital. There are sensors out there to help prevent a manual transmission vehicle from starting if it is not in neutral. However, none of them are 100% effective. At best, they are around 90%. I believe the 2000 Ranger has a neutral indicator switch. If so, make sure to hook into that. Those are the most reliable when preventing the vehicle from starting while in gear, about 99% effective.
