Want to use 31 spline axles in a 28 spline 8.8

So what I have read you can put disk brakes on a 7.5, all I need to do is find a mustang from 94-04. I have seen a few in the JY near me. And this setup will also bolt to an 8.8 28 spline too.

Thanks mac and danger ranger thats how I read it too.I'm excited about that want four disc setup to back down steep hills with more control but don't feel I need a 31 8.8.It hangs down a little more a little longer would have to set it up with 4:10s weld brackets blah blah.

Same here finding a 95+ exploder in local JY isnt going to happen anytime soon as they have older vehicles in there but have plenty of older exploders there with the 8.8 28 spline and a few mustangs that may have the rear disk brakes. I see this as after blowing up the 7.5, just put the disk brakes on the 8.8.

No Explorers came with 28 spline 8.8s. They were all 31 spline. The 95+ were discs, except for early Sport Tracs. The 95+ discs are a direct bolt on for the 31 spline drum axles.

And yes, Mustang discs will work on the 7.5 or the 8.8 28 spline. (Both Ranger axles use the same axle flange offset unless its a 31 spline FX4 axle).

While were discussing this with people who seem to know. The Explorer is 3" wider than the pickup rear axle it says in tech.I was thinking the B2 is a little shorter like 2" shorter than the pickup. My tires are going to stick out 2.5 inches on each side something like that. When you measure it it hangs down lower at the pumpkin I measured about an inch.Which makes sense cause the ring gear is about an inch bigger. The Explorer rear end is much better tougher with more after market support.Ad to these things the cost and work to make the ratio match the one I'm happy with.Every one will probably think I'm an idiot I don't feel I need the extra strength for what I do unless something changes not worth the sacrifice. But I really like the idea of putting on brakes.

i dont think you're an idiot, if you dont think you need it, leave the 7.5. i beat the crap out of mine in high school and never had anything even close to breaking. i was running stock tires, but i drove it through creeks, mudholes, rocky hill climbs plus all the other normal beatings that a vehicle takes from a teenaged driver. the only reason i'm getting rid of mine is b/c i wanna wheel it and i'm gonna run 33's (which i'm sure will one day lead to 35's). i wouldnt call it a sacrifice though.

Gotcha on all the Mustang disk breaks stuff now. Didnt read that anywhere in the tech library (last time I looked) that mentioned it say that you can put disk break on a 7.5 other then its costly for an aftermarket kit that I dont think exists anymore.

If this info hasnt been posted in the tech. library it should be, I found it very helpful.

I'd check into that kit, think it's meant for the larger Cobra brakes that requires 16" rims. It shows the 11.65" rotors while the stock GT uses 10.5". TeddyZee did the swap on his truck. I think RockAuto has some good prices but it's been awhile since I looked.

Yeah, that is the Cobra kit. Some 16s wont even work with that kit. I found that out when I tried to throw some 16s I had sitting around on the back of my 94 Cobra to roll it outside, They didnt fit. I had to put the 17s back on.

So what wont work in that kit, just the rotors?

Think that's about it, just too big with the smaller rims. Other than that, that's a good price. Think the Cobra calipers work on the smaller rotor but I's sure have to go back and check. It might be covered in that link I posted.

I think the Cobra brackets are a little bigger to move the caliper out to match up to the bigger rotor.
I know the Cobra and the GT calipers are interchangeable, but not exactly the same. The Cobra caliper has an extra cross brace across the front.
The Cobra pads are also thinner, because the Cobra rotor is a thicker vented rotor.

My problem is finding the back plate for the axle mounts for the setup to bolt to, dont want to pay $150 for them from the tech library liand cant find them online anywhere.

Looking at the calipers above, there is no height diffence so the change must be in the backing plate height instead. Ya there is the option of making my own too but would rather find the factory backing plates first and getting measurements and what not.

May have to jump on a mustang forum and ask them about it (or if anybody is able plz help).

Well after further looking the backing plate is taller on the Cobra setup so that kit is a complete no go.

Next question is...anybody know where I can find a stock 94-04 mustnag GT backing plate or the entire stock kit? If I can find those, I can piece together the set up.
