Thanks for the Help, I know that it really needs 4.10 gears, and with the 8.8 they aren't hard to come across. My question know is what color speedo gear do I need to install? original 3.55 28 splinedealer sells them.. they are about $7 a piece here. there's info in the tech library about how to find out which one you need and you can even get the part number of the gear and just go to ford and get it.
i've bought 5 or so in the past couple years from tire changes and gear changes.
you need more motor or more gear. i say do 4.56's!
other than that, grow up... stop being such a hard a$s and defending your actions so much. its your rig, do what you want... but don't get on here and ask for input then complain b/c you don't like the answers you get. when you start a thread saying what you did, you come across as a newb that doesn't know anything and just overall immature.if you ask questions on a forum, expect some answers you don't want...expect some useful answers. simple as that.
overall tho, i wish sometimes some of the guys wouldn't be so "harsh".. i don't want this to be compared to Pirate4x4... even tho we are NOOOO where close.
It's a torque problem. If you let the clutch up, then punch it, is there enough torque at near idle rpms with the throttle wide open to break it loose? The thing you need available is a lot more air that you can burn fuel with and make torque. Horsepower air is at high rpm and you aren' there yet--you need torque air. Torque air is air that's already there pretty much. You need a big cylinder, or you need to reduce the amount of torque needed--deep gears, lighter weight.
Headman makes headers for the 4.0L OHV.

here.. figure it out

first you need to know what you have right now. then take that and multiply it by (4.10/3.55)
so if you have a 18 tooth yellow one now, you will need 18x(4.10/3.55)= 20.7, so that would be a 21 tooth needed.
NOW, if you are 2wd w/ no transfer case and auto trans-- get a gear for the autos.
if you are 4wd-- all transfer case vehicles in that era use a manual gear. doesn't matter that i have an auto trans, since its in the t-case--- its a gear for a manual.
Good Info thanks for the help, after the BBK I will look into a higher gear. This might be a dumb question, but if you have ever had a Summit Racing catalog there is a huge selection of 8.8 gears, and there are ford racing gears as well for the mustang. Could I in theory use mustang gears, or have to find 28 spline? Note I just started Manual trans and diff service classes
ring and pinions are the same. mustang. explorer. ranger. 28 spline. 31 spline. whatever. i've always been told that they are the same.
i ended catching a sale day at 4wheelparts and saved some money.
check w/ northridge 4x4, 4wheelparts, and completeoffroad.com (and summit). see who is the cheapest. northridge will do free shipping usually and they pricematch.
and since it is only 4.10's... you could always check junkyards. find a 4.10 explorer
take the entire axle. disc brake, 4.10's, 31 spline, could be limited slip. will take some slight mods to make it fit tho.
Dude,
If I busted your chops I am sorry. I had to drive to work at 5:30 this morning on the ice. You wanted to spin the tires and I cant make mine stick. I will trade you anyday.
another dumb question how hard is it to change the gear ration on my limited slip? I never have change the gear ratio so, I don't know, but what I do know is that I'll be using the schools toolS![]()
personally i hate dealing w/ Limited slips... not b/c they are hard. just b/c i don't like them.![]()
seriously tho, that's something better left for you to research and find someone local that could help you. setting up gears is a pretty complex thing.. and if you do it wrong, its gonna be expensive to fix your mistakes. find someone that knows what they are doing....plus, you are starting diff classes right? you'll figure it out.don't be scared of a limited slip...its easy.
GoGoggansGo,
I wanted to try to give you a little advise. My impression of you is a gung-ho youth with hundreds of dreams about going fast. You seem to be all over the map with your ideas which suggests a lack of knowledge.
I know that you want it all and you want it now, I know that because I still feel the same way myself. But I have learned that won't happen. One step at a time. You're on the right track in going to school and asking questions. Don't give up!!!
Ignore the naysayers and plug along.
Your dad has experience on his side and has your best interests at heart. There is a reason for what he says about what to do to your truck. One of the reasons I see is that you're a broke-ass student. Try to concentrate on schooling, do your home-work, even if that means going out with your buddies drinking only once a month. YOU have to control your behavior so that you benefit. The reason that I mention the partying is that's the route I took when I was younger, and I finally sobered up a couple of years ago. Thirty years of drinking and I have no money in the bank, my knees are worn out, and it dribbles when I pee. Trust me when I say that keeping in school is your best bet. You want to race, check into auto-cross and/or rallying, don't do it on the street. Do it for REAL.
Enough reading my babble, get back to your homework.
Good luck,
Richard
