Ok, the purpose of this thread is to show those who are interested how to do a sbc swap in a 1st gen (83-88) ranger. This is not a commenting thread. If you would like to add your input, or comment. please click my other thread (just plain stupid, doing a sbc swap w/blackwidow) as i would like to keep this thread clutter free. This is a how-to thread and hopefully we can make it a stickey when i am done.

So the basis of this build is to take my daily driven 1984 ranger with the stock 2.3 and 4-speed, and turn it into a drivable street machine. So my goal was to drive my ranger while i was gathering parts for my engine. Well that didnt go as planned. my 2.3 bit the dust while reving it out to 5,000 rpm. The carnage was a blown piston and a locked oil pump. But hey, got me started faster,

So you know the truck, what kind of engine to use, and what kind of transmission? Im using a 350 chevy out of a 1972 chevelle and a th700r4 transmission. but you could also use a long tail shaft turbo 350 because both of these trannys bolt up to the existing crossmember. so far i have laid the 350 in there to see what needs to be done. i wanted to set my motor back as far as possible, so i needed to notch my heater box (will post pics soon) but generally this is not needed. also, you dont need to modify the firewall. i used a small cap hei distributor with the seperate coil for extra clearance. motor mounts- i recommend the solid frame mounts from jegs with the 1979 and later "clamshell" style engine mounts. as for headers/manifolds- im using the oldstyle "ramhorm" manifolds because they fit the best. but ive seen s10 swap headers work. for steering- switch to a manual box, or use the stock chevy pump, and modify the ranger lines to adapt to the p/s pump. PICS ARE COMING SOON.

check out my YouTube channel. I go over what mounts. Exhaust. And other things that have worked for me doing this swap. I’ve done 2 first gen rangers. Both with sbc engines.
