Yeah, I just come here when I need help, but who else can I depend on?? Anyway, I just installed a speed calibrator on my '96 Ranger, the VSS is at the tranny. I did a diff. gear swap, 3.73 to 4.10, yeah it's nice, but the speed was off 6-7 mph and crappy fuel mileage also!!

My question is, which wire on the VSS is ground? I don't have a voltmeter handy to test. have a pink & gray I hooked up the pink as ground. Am I right ??

Well, following inststuctions and checking with a voltmeter afterwards, I was right, pink was ground, (.3), so I'm set !!

And you're right also, don't start a project without ALL the tools. My fault, I didn't read far enough ahead, wasn't prepared............Lee

Umm, 0.3V is not ground. The voltage drop across a wire is zero.

You MIGHT have found a latent grounding problem. Find the voltage drop between that pink wire and the battery.

Grounding problems can cause "interesting" driveability issues.

you need an OHMmeter to check ground not a voltmeter most multimeters have ohmmeters just make sure you have it set to the correct meter setting and you should be able to find ground easily. if .3 was the ohm reading then that is a good ground.

No, you can check grounds with a voltmeter, as long as the circuits in question are powered. But you can't neglect small readings. They must be truly dinky.

You CAN'T check a ground with an ohmmeter unless you remove it from any source of power. Which is quite difficult, and often interferes with the measurement.
