Very Stiff Ride?

Hey there guys, I just bought a 1999 Ford Ranger Ext. Cab 4 Dr., 4.0L, Auto, 4x4, and it has 3'' Body Lift. I was wondering how would I know if the torsion bars are cranked? The truck has a very stiff ride on offroad roads, Maybe the previous owner cranked or maxed out the TB's. The wheels seem to be "Butterflied" or "not straight" while looking from the front of the truck, so that would be another hint... Let me know what your input is of this. Thanks in advance..

THere really is not a way to tell you can try to look at the bolt but iam not sure how to tell.

Crawl under the truck and look at the bolts. The passenger side should have more showing than the drivers side.

Hey tom, So if the passengers side bolt has more thread showing, then the TB are not cranked? Or are they?

Not necessarilly. The passenger side has more threads showing than the drivers side from the factory. I'm not exactly sure how much of those threads are showing but there will be more showing on the passenger side regardless. I cranked my drivers side bolt to level out the front a little more and only the passenger side a tad. I noticed it when going over hard bumps because it's stiffer on the drivers side than the passenger side. How big are the tires on your truck?

you will be able to tell also by the angle of the tbar post a side pic that shows the tbars in the pic and ill be able to tell you

Posts like this are what the Moderators are talking about. Not contributing anything. There is a PM function for pics and crap. Post them in the Show off your Truck thread. He's trying to get some information about his apparent issue.

When you get the truck back measure from the ground to the top of the fender well. I have 265's which are about 31's and it's 36 inches from the ground to the top of the fenderwell. Another thing you want to do is crawl under the truck when you get it back and see how many threads are showing on the bolts. With a 4x4 you're not going to get a ride like a 2wd so you have to factor that in aswell.

if your tires are out of whack like your sayin it was probably cranked and not realigned. also the truck would have come from factory with the front end sittin lower than the rear so that when you haul a bunch of weight in the bed the rear would be more level with the front instead of lookin like its tryin to do a wheelie. so thats another way to tell if theyre cranked, if the trucks more level then they probably were cranked.

My first Ranger was a '99 and the bars were set fairly high at the factory. If it is sitting level already then you don't want to turn them any higher. When the lease was up on my '99 I got an '02 which came with a very nose-down attitude in front, such that the stock tires rubbed at full lock just turning in a parking lot. Turned the bars to level, realigned it, and put on 265/70-16's.
