So the old ranger blew a head gasket, about 30k miles after the previous owner had it replaced. He blew it, ruined the heads, and his shop put in junkyard heads for a bargain and off he went. Sold it to me, i ran it for 20k miles, blew it, so here i am.
I pulled the heads, saw the blowout in the gasket, but still had the heads leak checked. There were no cracks, but my exhaust valves were "tuliped", i.e the edges flaring upwards, probably due to using 200k mileage junkyard heads. I bit the bullet and had him do a valve job, total cost $350.....ouch.
Now, i am pulling the rest of the engine to change the oil pan gasket, crank seals and check the pickup for debris....and i though, heck, why not replace the main bearings and rings. I went out, bought a hone and ridge reamer, then saw that bearings were $100 and rings were $100...ouch.
The engine has 130K on it, the cylinders look pretty good, there isnt much of a lip on the top. Am I wasting my money doing this? I havent measured the cylinders yet but I am hoping they are within spec to just drop in new standard rings.
