I wanted to do a 302 swap into my ranger and have decided that the frame is not up to the added weight of a 302/np435/203/205 doubler. My frame already looks like swiss cheese and has had a cracked frame repair along with rusted out coil buckets ect. The way the ranger is now would work as a tough wheeler but living a mile high above sea level, I really need more power than the turd 2.8 can provide. Now to my question, what is the value of a 85 ranger with 6'' lift, 31spline 8.8 and locked d35 with 4.88 gears worth roughly? I think the body/frame have 180k miles and the engine susposily has 50k and 20k on trans. All axles have maybe have 15k on them. The body is dented up, rear bpillar is caved in but still functual and the drivers floor board needs replaced. Would it be better to try and sell the truck as a whole or part it out the axles/lift , engine/trans and scrap the frame and cab?

Sad to see another one die, but moneywise you are probably better off to part it out. :bawling:

No question, you'd be better off parting that out if it's rusted up as bad as you say.

The axles alone geared to 4.88 are probably almost worth what the truck is (more if they have lockers)... Take all of what's good on it off, then turn the cab & frame in for scrap.

However if it were mine, I'd instead take those parts and swap it all into a BII (or another Ranger if you need a pickup bed) :)
(well, minus the engine maybe... Get a 4.0L. On a '89-'90 BII it's all plug & play. It's also basically plug & play on earlier models too if you also swap in the donor's dash)

It is very sad to see it die but im susprised that is has lasted this long. I got it 5years ago with a 4'' lift already for $700. I was just going to wheel the piss out of it and get another but I fell in love. I have thought that about saving the parts and swapping them to another rbv but now am considering selling them and getting some tons. Its just an idea still as this beast still has a few more hard runs to do before I finally part ways with it. What would be a good asking price for the axles, lift/suspension ect? The current tires are staying with me along with all the goodies like radio, cb, tool box ect so that will all go on to the next beater. I like to wheel beaters 1 because when I break something, Im not a whiny bitch on the trail who says there never going wheeling again and 2 its just flat out fun.

Thanx
guys

With the frame in that condition I'd say it's worth about $350.

At the scales.

That is all a new Ranger is worth at the scales too.

It is worth more than salvage with the axles and lift kit... and it does run so even U-Pull-It would pay more than that if he poked something under it to drive it there. The sign out front at the one I go to says $325+, and considering some of the junk they get in there I would say a running truck would be way over that.

Call a salvage yard and get a price on the axles and add what you have in them for gears and lockers. I see lift kits for $350-450 on craigslist... dunno what they actually sell for though. You will get what you get, all depends on how many people in your area want what you have.

What kind of lift is it??? If its a good skyjacker you could probably get 400 for it. Other wise if its a super lift/ rough country mabey 200-300.

Im not 100% on what the name of the lift is. I think its a very early superlift. I know the ex rad arms are old superlifts. It has drop brackets and not the cheap plates.

$350 for the frame is more than what I was expecting but Im sure the bed and cab will bring next to nothing so what $ I mite recover will seem to come from the axles and lift. Highly doubt the 2.8 will bring much inless some poor soul is looking for a pinto engine replacement. :icon_rofl:

Thanx for the insight guys.

If it runs good and you ever come a long ways east I would be game on the 2.8.

I have a plan for a tractor running gear... and it won't be the same old boring SBC that has become so popular lately. :icon_welder: Mine was getting kinda weezy. I have been flip flopping back and and forth if it would be worth the effort to swap, but the 60 degree V-6 will neatly hide behind sideshields.

What would you be asking for the front pig? Drop me a private message.

not sure yet, Im still planning on finishing out this wheeling season with the truck since me and friends go up every weekend and I dont want to be w/o a vehicle. Ill know better what Im selling and for how much when I start tearing it down in 2-3months.

The engine actually runs great, has 145 psi compression across the board and never smokes or uses any oil and always holds good oil psi. I just think the holley 350 on it is too much for it. There is a chance Ill be going to east iowa in november for thanksgiving but I would have no way of bringing the engine along in a honda accord with four people unless strapped to the roof :icon_rofl:
