V-8 redline

I have a 1989 5.0L(non-HO) in my Ranger i just want to know where the redline is. When i floor it, the transmission shift at about 5500 RPM.
 
But the real question is.. is it still making power, or just noise above 5500...?

I wouldn't be real comfortable with taking a 5.0 with stock rod bolts much over 6000...
 
If it's a stock Non HO 5.0, it was finished making power at about 3500-4000. 5500-6000 is about the limit for the stock rod bolts. ARP bolts in the stock C8OE rods and you can up that to 7500.
 
ok so the redline is somewhere near 4000-4500 RPM

i owuld say redline for that motor is 5500, the end of ur power bands is at about 4500, after that ur just putting undue stress on the motor....

270 ft lbs @ 2400 rpm

I believe stock they shifted at 4800, but its been a while since i driven one
 
Take it up to 10,000RPM and see what happens :) lol.... Didnt the truck motors have like a torquey cam in them and made them make the power down low for say towing ?
 
Most of the 5.0L was around 5200-5500 redline. If it's pretty much stock you're just making noise after 4500 or so. I have personally seen stock 302s and 351s wound to 7K plus and by some miracle hold together but not for too long. The main thing is the rod bolts. My stroker is stated to hold together to 7500 if the stock rods are being reused, that is if the rest of the engine is up to that task. A few years back when I grenaded a C4 behind a stock bottom end 351 it hit 8700 and it held together; lost oil pressure after that though. If you want your engine to last; get a rev limiter.

Yes it's from a full size Bronco and it's stock(except the yellow ACCEL spark plug wire lol)

thanks for the advive projectnightmare i think i will invest into a rev limiter.

Anybody know a way to adjust my transmission, so it will shift at lower RPM.

My transmission is an AOD from a 1989 FS Bronco
 
you can try less TV pressure, but dont go below 5 psi at idle

LESS? TV pressure to shift at lower RPMS? am I understanding you right? So backing off the TV cable will result in a lower RPM shift and snugging it up will result in a higher RPM shift?
 
No don't take pressure from the TV cable. All you will do is kill it. The throttle valve is what boost fluid pressure when you hit the gas, less pressure equals burnt trans. The vaccum modulator will adjust shift points to an extent.

no it wont kill it. i didnt say take it away. i said lower it. if hes got it maxxed out now, it wont hurt it, you just have to know what you're doing. keep the pressure on the port between 5-10 at idle and it will be just fine. i have mine set higher because i want it to shift higher. that wont hurt anything either,actually its better on it. but just dont go below the idle setting of 5 and it will last.OH, and there is no vaccuum modulator on an AOD

Where do I tie in a gauge to watch this? (So I know I'm in the desired range.) Can I just 'T' off the trans fluid coolant line?
What is the max pressure I will see? (So I know what sort of range gauge to get, would an oil pressure gauge do well in this application?)

Sorry I was thinking of a C4 at the end there. Unless you know how to adjust the TV properly as bottledGT explains then don't mess with it. I have seen way too many AODs burn up from people not setting it up properly especially after either an engine swap or changing to an aftermarket intake.
