USMC mechanic

I know a guy that was a mechanic in Marines.Don't know what he specifically worked on as a Marine but when he got out he worked on cranes for 8 years, then worked on big tractors, dozers etc for 5 years. He's now a golf course mechanic where he works on everything from small mower engines, including grinding reels, small tractors to the F250 plow they use in the winter. He seems to like the variety, can't imagine the pay is as good but he seems to enjoy it.

After a number of years of working on the big machines, I could see why he would need a change, even for less pay...but more enjoyment.

.....also take all the college courses you can and save for the GI bill for future training education.
A local son who enlisted (just received an early call to report to Parris Island) had wanted to join the Marines before he starts his formal studies. Once he completes two years, the USMC will help pay for his college education.
As a condition for being accepted into the Marines, Ben was required to take AP college credits at the High School. He had 28 credits upon graduating, whereas he needed 18. Because he earned additional credits, Ben will receive a slightly higher salary while in the 13 week basic training. Once he passes 'boot camp' Ben will be taking aviation courses-

the gi bill is not free, its is a basic like 401, you contribute up to x they will then contribute up to y. Dont remember all the calculations but the more you put in the more you may get out. The ads for the $25000 college aid should include that is co contributary and not a freebee!

Not sure of the program the marines have that you are referring to. A lady I work with was telling me about her grand daughter and having to return to NC as she had come home to AZ but was told either return to NC or payback what the navy had paid or something? there are a lot of gimmicks out there to entice young ones to enlist. The biggest being when they offered 10-20K to enlist to be an infantryman or other combat mos. Not an mos I would want when there is shooting going on. I know that the navy and AF had guys being trained as truck drivers in overage mos's for iraq. army still provided the security but the af and navy guys were not particularly happy to be driving in a shooting range!

The story sounds the national call to service program which is a horrible way to deceive kids to join. They end up stuck in a reserve command for 4 years after 2 years of active duty service. With no feasible way to go full active duty.

The g.i. bill is $100 a month for 24 months and pays out college tuition plus housing allowance for 3 years. That's the best 401k I've ever seen. For me its $2400 in return for $36000 for housing in addition the tuition is covered by the VA. Explain to me how that's a bad thing?
