After careful observation, much deliberating and some scrutinized planning it looks like there's a chance I can look at getting an extended cab Ranger this Spring.

I have not been the BEST haggler in my life for purchasing goods, but I have tried talking sense into some people. Both times left me walking out the door with no vehicle.

So this time around I was thinking something a little different. I have noticed that there are several trucks that have been "hanging around" on the local 'buy and sell' boards (Kijiji, Craigslist and AutoTrader) and was thinking that going to look at those trucks right away would be a good idea. If the trucks are worth looking at a second time in a few months and are still around then (example, a GOOD truck, but priced way too high, like a used car lot) then when I really am ready to buy I should go back and remind them that I was there a few months ago and walked away because they weren't willing to budge then.

Does it sound like a worthwhile investment of time? Or would it be a total waste?

Let me know what you all think please. Any other ideas along this line would be appreciated.

Please and thanks!

What's the point? You spend months talking them down from a ridiculous price to a reasonable one. I just start with someone who lists a reasonable price to begin with and save myself the agony.

I always drive a huge piece of crap to go look at a vehicle initially and wearing my filthy work clothes.... then when we strike a deal, I show up in my new truck dressed decent.

Always carry an envelope with your first offer in your pocket.... say they want 1,100. have a bank envelope with 750 in it..... if they flat out say no, reach for your wallet and pull out 2 crumpled 50's. If they say no reach in your wallet and start counting 1's and 5's and be like, this is all I have... maybe we can work something out a guarenteed sale tonight, or I wish you the best. (yes I did something very similar with the last vehicle I purchased.... only with lower numbers, lol)

On a lot, get the price down, then start going for the perks that would cost you a crap-ton. Window tint, premium sound, bedliner....., Ford oem seats. tires, detail job, another coat of wax, and rock chip touch up.

Yes I did that with the last truck I bought with a dealer........ hell I walked away with 2k dollars worth (of what it would have cost me) for free off the final settled price.

Trust me.... if the vehicle has been up for sale for any amount of time, a sure deal is what you want to show, and promise them.

(BTW, the driving a beater thing doesn't work at car dealerships, dress nice, speak properly, act like you make more than you do............ and that's just to get a decent salesman that will even work with you or take you serious)

This is Canada. We don't have either of those up here. (reasonable prices or sellers)

I was planning on the "short stacked envelope" thing this time around. :icon_thumby:

When I am trying to sell something, I list a reasonable price and if somebody doesn't want to pay that I tell them that it can sit in my yard and rust before I let it go for that.
When I am buying something I just start with something in my price range, and if it's in good enough shape for what they want I will take it, if it is horrible I will just leave.

Just don't budge, if your even a little iffy, let them sleep on it. If you guarnetee them a sale today for less than what they want, they are more likely to go for it then to wait and have to keep it on the lot.

In the US they have to pay taxes on vehicles as property.... they can lose a ton if they don't sell one fast. So generally speaking they would rather get short-changed today, than get burned in 6 months.

When I sell I always list a tad higher than what I want, because people like to feel like they got a better deal... like they somehow got one over on you, whatever..... it's true, if you pay straight asking price without even feeling to see if that's their final offer, your just asking to waste money, It'd be more fun to me to watch money fly out of the window running 70mph than to wonder if I could have just saved 500 dollars after I've allready shaken hands and signed the title.

If you talk price with a dealer talk about out the door price only they like to stick fees in the deal at the end. When you talk about price feel free to discuss other lot prices and and other cars so he knows he has to win your business but here's the thing if your to ridiculous with your lowballing he's going to figure there's no money for him in dealing with you and he won't have time for you.If your buying a car that cost enough for financing but you have cash act into financing while your negotiating price there's more money in financing than car sales. If he thinks he's going to make money on financing you might get the car a little softer.Lastly don't try to bullshit him he's a professional.

money talks and bullshit walks if i buy a car i have cash right then and there.

I always just show up, ask about it, walk around it, check it out. Don't act to interested. Throw your price out there, and if they bite, pick it up. If they get all insulted and don't want it, then tell them if they still have it in a month, call you. Don't EVER be in a rush for a good deal. It's not worth it. My truck was listed for 2200 on CL, I showed up, told him 1200 if he wants it gone that night. He was all hesitant and didn't want to, I said I have one more hundred dollar bill, otherwise I don't want it. He bit, thats what I'm driving today

Not true...I bought a car for half of what I could sell it for in spring (300zx too:thefinger:) My tactic is look around frequently and jump on deals what they last. Also yeah, cash talks
