I have yet to read through my Haynes manual, but I'm wondering if there is an easy way to remove just the upper part of the intake manifold on my 97 Ranger 4.0. I hydrolocked my engine but didn't bend anything. I already got the water blown out of the cylinders and my compression is OK but I still have some water and gunk trapped in the upper part of the intake.

Is there an easy way to do this and am I going to have to buy any new seals or gaskets to put it back together? Thanks for the help!

Pull the plugs and crank it over. You can spray wd40 into the intake while it's cranked over but thats about it. Taking off the upper intake would be completely unnessessary. Consider yourself lucky if getting the water out saves it. The last engine I hydrolocked required a piston and rod assembly.

The upper intake is easy. Just unbolt everything connected to it like egr. Intake tube. Throttle body, and sensors and whatnot as well as any vacuum lines connected. I spent a couple hours one day and removed it, cleaned all the gunk out, and threw it back on. You will need a gasket that goes in between the upper and lower manifolds but that's it

Ok thanks guys! I don't need to pull the entire intake just the top part (the plastic part the throttle body connects to) because there is about an inch of water sittin in there along with mud and dirt because the intake pipes are half way up. Unless I can get the ass end of my truck high enough to dump it out, I gotta take it apart :annoyed: I'll be doing that tomorrow night along with pulling the starter (solenoid is fried) and checking my front and rear dif and transfer case

ick... i had to do an upper intake on an aerostar today. a ranger would be cake by comparison.

if your intake has rubber o-ring type gaskets you can usually re-use them without issue

I got it all torn down except what I believe is the blow-by pipe that connects to the intake from the valve cover on the drivers side, I can't get the bolts loose, I posted a couple pics on a new thread.

The only reason I wanted to check the diff's was because the front one has a breather tube that comes up out of the top then turns down, I didn't know if water would get in there or not.
