The D35 is definitely a sturdy axle. The biggest thing IMO a D44 has over the 35 is the larger brakes (the D35's brakes don't seem like they'd be incredibly difficult to overheat if you do a lot of repeated hard stopping).
However 38" and bigger rubber is a bit much for either one of these axles. That's starting to get into D60 territory (it would cost about the same to put all the bling upgrades into a D44 too, so my thinking is if you want to go big, you might as well go with the D60 to start, along with a rear to match).
