Up here in Canada we have two different u-joints sizes. The typical 1.188 and a smaller 1.06 something. Mine are the typical 1.188 and I took a look at the smaller ones, and they are pretty tiny in comparison.

hey...just did my front u-joints last week :)...i had the same question you had..what size...if you have a Dana 35 you need to get the 1.188 and if your running a Dana 28 you need the 1.63

http://www.therangerstation.com/tech_library/4wd_Front_Axles.html

Scroll down and youll see the two different axles...

Also...are you planning on doing all 3 u joints or just the two outer ones??...if just the two outer there is no need to get into the pig like some people say..the pass. side shaft is held in by a slip yolk to the stub shaft...another friendly note...the ABS sensor has two small bolts that hold it on on the back side of the knuckle there kind of a bitch to get out but just be careful not to round them out...

Any questions PM ....it is a simple job...i thought it was gonna be tough..:)

Yep, the trucks came with either a D35 axle (larger wheel u-joint) or a D35/D28 hybrid which has the smaller of the two. Doesn't it make you feel good to have the bigger pair! :icon_thumby:

No, the hybrid uses the same large D35 joints, the gears/carrier and the neck down in the shafts is the only difference. The 2 joints sizes is simply an error with the parts store.

Yea, they should be the same. Don't go back with the little 297 joints. Use the Spicer 5-760X joints. They are much beefier and forged. Much stronger.

Not only was there two different sizes on the computer but also in their parts book. Up here we have two different sizes. Maybe its an early B series u-joint I don't know. But it was in two places. I'll call napa and see if they have two sizes. But the guys at parts source were at one time mechanics and they have always been able to help me before and knew what they were talking about.

There is no difference between Canadian models and US models.....the d35 only has 1 u joint size - spicer number 297x or the forged version 760x.

The d28 uses the smaller u joints (see tiny)

Ok, I get that the d35 only came with the one size u-joint. Is there anyway to tell the difference between the d28 and d35. Because the parts store sees both axels, but can't tell you wich one you have. The guys at parts source say the smaller of the two axels is rare. I just think its wierd that not only on the computer but also in the books there are two u-joints to choose from. I'm new to the ranger and the smaller axels, and maybe someday I'll look back on this and laugh at myself, but right now all I know is that I had the choice between two u-joints.

Dana 28's are unfortunatly not rare, I have two of them. The D35/D35 hybrid came out in 1990. Either way you '95 should use the bigger stuff like the D35, you either have the D35 or D35 hybrid.

From the link early in the thread:

Thanks for the info guys. I wish I knew this stuff before I made myself look like a jack a##. I guess its a live and learn thing. Are the d35 hub assembly and the 1988 1/2 year f150 d44 hub assembly the same(not in size but in process of disassembly).

Easier, the locking hub just comes off with the wheel off and depending on if you have auto or manual hubs are a piece of cake. Except it will probably take a few hits with a bfh to get the spindles off.

Hybrid started in 93, pretty much all 2.3s got them and some 3.0s got them.

Any ranger after 1990-1997 will use the bigger u joints (spicer 297x)

Like I mentioned in your other thread, whoever writes the parts references for the chain stores is an ignoramus. They cant tell you what axle you have in your '95 because the other one doesn't exist.

It used to be they'd ask you what your gear ratio was to try to identify what axle you have, but seems maybe they got away from that. It's still wrong though, as there is only ONE part number needed for any part outside of the diff housing itself on a '91-'97 Ranger axle of a given year (brake parts, wheel bearings, spindles, seals, and on and on and on).

(Further confusing the issue, 1990 is the ONLY year where both size u-joints were ever used, as the switch from the D28 to the D35 took place mid-year)
