Twin stick transfer cases…

So basically my end goal is to build a capable off-roader and potential recovery rig… LS could work, I’ve seen that frequently used. Also thought about a Cummins. Or I dunno. There’s definitely drivetrain options to do what I want.

My real thing was a desire to see if there is some junkyard T-case options that can be rigged with a twin stick so I could start working on collecting a couple. Or if the 205 is the thing to get beyond really opening up the wallet for aftermarket T-cases.

in this case....205.

they run 250 to 400 dollars around me still...

used to be 50-150

The Atlas is the only expensive part of that swap. Should be able to scoop up a 4.8 or 5.3 for a few hundred bucks. Turbo 400 will cost you a bit more to get one built - worth spending the money on.

This dude was wheeling with us last summer and his little moon buggy had some little turbo 4 cylinder engine and a TH350 and an Atlas... there are options. GM is usually the cheapest.

this isnt my wallet.....thats what my wallet says....we are using blues wallet with this excercise...
My wallet might be smaller than yours… :icon_rofl:

Fair enough.

So to my extended question then…
What, if any, are my options for twin sticking my Choptop? Or would that just be another good way to grenade a D-35 with 35” tires? Choptop is a 4.0 OHV, FM-146 (will be replaced by an M5OD when it dies), currently BW1350m, D-35 and 8.8” with 4.10 gears and 35” tires.

I’ll have to take a good, hard look around here now that I know. If I can’t come up with anything, I might have to try to source from outside my area. A lot of the local junkyards are pretty ridiculous about anything old going straight to the crusher

Part of me hates that GM is usually the cheapest option but I guess someone has to be the cheapest…

I like the shit out of this... I might go that route with my 2 door Explorer instead of the Behemoth box. I was wanting to go C5->Behemoth->205 but that's 1/3 of the cost and shorter. I think 5.38 gears and an auto will be fine, the extra gear reduction in the Behemoth would be nice... but... I worry about drive shaft angles in that short chassis.

well. then.....buy two godzillas.....and give amandas 2.3 and 10 speed to me....

Install a second stick
Pretend it does something

Lil blue's choptop... a SOS beacon would make the most sense.
Unfortunately…

Darn thing is always broke, and I probably could have built a decent buggy for what I’ve dumped into it. It’s a lot of fun when it’s working though.

Still better than working with mine. If you were building from mine, one of these would still be a stretch... (at least I sprung for the big one as an example)

Seriously though, I do understand the pain of these decisions as I'm trying to make them myself.

The F-100 will be getting some upgrades, I'm just not sure what yet. I don;t care about twin stick for my purpose, but I would like a married 2 speed transfer case. If I keep 390 and NP435, then I too am hunting for a 205 transfer case (and the proper 435). Alternatively I can swap to a later OD transmission and transfer case, but then I'm getting into adapters.

Do I want to keep hunting for a 205, or do I want to forget it and go modern? I really think I'd like to have the OD for hjighway driving and if I ever get to take the truck on a road trip.

Either way the engine will need attention too. Either the FE needs to be rebuilt, or swap something else in. Doing a "modernized" FE rebuild will likely run similar in price to doing a Godzilla swap, but be easier for not having to cobble up mounts and stuff. Both FE and Godzilla have their strong points, and both have their drawbacks. Just can;t quite decide on which path to take and all of them are going to hurt the wallet.

FWIW my 205 is on a 2004 5 speed transmission, it is the standard fullsize Ford 6 bolt pattern.
