Truck wont go in gear

I'm new here and I have myself a bit of a problem. I recently put a used engine in my straight drive 94 ranger and when I start it it won't go in gear. If I try to force it the truck starts dying down. And when I try to start with it in gear it just jumps and cuts off. I drained the tranny fluid and it was black. Idk if the tranny is the problem or not, I don't want to buy another tranny if I don't have to. Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

1-fill trans with some fresh fluid.

2-bleed clutch

3-cross fingers

4-start it up and see how it goes.




another thing that i just remembered reading about- some pressure plates needed to be reset if removed and reinstalled. not sure if this applies to your setup.

I assume manual transmission?????

Does the stick shift move and feel OK with engine off?

If so then there is a clutch problem, you will need to pull transmission out.

What engine was in there and what year and size engine is in there now?

Yes it is a manual and its shifts good while turned off. I had a 4.0 and replaced it with another 4.0 out of a 94 explorer. I put the old flywheel, clutch and pressure plate on it that came off the first engine

Something's not right with your flywheel, clutch and pressure plate...that or the clutch master cylinder isn't doing its job.

Hey guys, so I dropped the tranny thinking something was wrong with my clutch, maybe in backwards. But no, everything looked alright. I'm going to buy a new clutch kit anyways before I put the tranny back on. But idk what it could of been? Maybe I tightened the pressure plate bolts too tight? I'm baffled?
