hey i got an 88 ranger 4wd 2.9l manual, wats the cheapest mods to do while increasing power, i adjusted the distributor already and that helped, i also hae on an electric fan and a cold air intake, a recent problem i have now is it burns some oil, maybe every month or so without driving even 1000 miles, the oil light comes on and ineed to add a quart, any help on the oil or the mods?

Do you have many leaks at all? Perhaps theres a leak that so bad, it's burning off of the motor?

If not, it sounds like it's burning it. Try going up a notch on the oil weight to compensate. If you normally run 10-30, try 10-40. I wouldn't go much higher than that though.

As far as power goes, there isn't too much that can be done other than what you've done and maybe exhaust. Distributor timing isn't really going to do much in my opinion. I'd put it back to 12*BTDC.

These little motors are pretty much doing all they can.

How many miles on the motor?

Yes, check for leaks. Could be bad oil pan or valve cover gaskets.

Maybe try a 180 degree thermostat to let it run cooler if you live in a hot climate. (cheap mod)

turbo, blower, 4.0 swap, 5.0 swap... that's about it for getting more power out of the engine...

cold air intake does nothing, it makes it SOUND like there is more power, spark advance will do more than a CAI, you could put a more aggressive cam in it, provided you could find one... port and/or polish the heads... exhaust will be minimal... electric fan won't do much either, though i personally think it's a nice mod... the biggest thing with them is that if it fails, your engine overheats, if the mechanical fan fails, your engine has extra drag on it, and you burn more fuel

You mean my Gold Air Eentake and my flame steekers aren't adding power?!

stickers yes, gold air, no

TRS stickers adds +5 hp over regular stickers.

5% each... I got a pm from Jim, saying 3 of mine shipped today

a cool nickname also helps ........ that adds 50 hp by itself.

Wow that's good Sh!t guys! I need to get stickers now! It explains everything!!!
Dekka: I woul sub 1qt of oil for Lukas oil stabilizer in my 2.9's and it was a 2-3mpg gain and 5mph top end gain. It sounds dumb I know but I swear by the stuff for 2.9's.
Other then that a 5.0 swap does wonders! Well as long as you dont do the dub sh!t I've done. If you need a list of what not to do I've got a pretty big list!

How would you know? Muwahahahaha

thanks for the help guys, im gunna try tightening the valve cover gaskets, either that or get new gaskets and some people have told me to do the 4.0 swap, umm i also thoght about a v8 swap, what ford v8 makes for the best swap?

The 5.0/302 fits easier than anything else.
