I might go take a look at 'er, looks like it's in good condition, sell contacted me and said he bought it from a retired guy that used it to pull a smaller camper to Arizona every winter, he is selling it to get a 4 door. Said it's in really good condition.

Not sure if it would be a good idea to go with a diesel or not. I do some towing, mostly boats but also a skid steer and other various equipment, so it would be nice for that, but my dad's 1/2 ton Chev will handle them alright, he did comment on how much nicer his 3/4 ton was for towing the skid steer though, his 1/2 ton gets thrown around a bit in the wind.

So what do you guys think? Gas or diesel? I do plan on keeping the Ranger if I buy an older truck, since the Ranger is almost paid off, so that makes the diesel or tempting.

only thing I would change in that truck would be a four door truck. But IMO the 7.3l was the best powerstroke made. I always wanted a truck like that.

there one on here here running around with 300,000+ miles and he just did a solid axle to, in my opinion the 7.3(even though international), was ford last good diesel.

all early ford diesels are international , from the first one , the 6.9 , to the last 7.3 put in any truck

i myself live by the 7.3 , our company truck has one , with 133k driving miles and 7k hours on the engine driven hydraylics for the bucket , and she is still going strong , ours is a power stroke

my best friend however lives by the 7.3 Naturally aspirated , they have one with 560k miles on it , go out , cycle the glow plugs twice and she starts right up , the engine has 540k on it , it was a 6.9 but then the block cracked , so it got a 7.3 put in it , the only other work it has had done is had the clutch replaced

i had a 1989 f250 with a 7.3 that had almost 700,000 miles. there is a 4 wheel drive up the road from me with supposedly a million miles

i myself own a 2001 f-350 7.3 powerstroke. Only thing done to it is a FIPK k&n intake, and a edge evo programmer. I've had the tranny rebuilt once(HD billet converter and upgraded bands and such, i added a Bully dog shift enhancer as well to boost line pressure), but it was around 114k miles and was told that the 01's tend to crap out the tranny around that mileage because ford used experimental parts or some bs in them. I love the truck, im hoping soon to grab a flatbed to throw on it, im just tired of the reg long box heh. My friend owned a 97 powerstroke identical to that one, his ran pretty good as well and had around the same amount of mileage as that one, but he had quite a bit of goodies on it, a couple were already on the truck and he didnt know it until he bought it. i would go for it, might even be able to have him come down on the price a little since it is around 14 yrs old. if you test drive it, keep an eye on the OD off button on the shifter knob, if its flashing, means somethin is up with the tranny. not much goes wrong with the 7.3, just keep up on the oil changes and what not, and they'll last a LONG time.

165K is not a ton of miles considering what engine it's got, but for $7000, I would expect it to be near perfect inside and out. Being owned by a retired guy always seems to be a good thing.

id do it

no rust on a minnesota trucks a good thing! most that i have seen like that were ether non winter drivers or were washed really often. we use ALOT of road salt and cloride on the gravel roads around here and im sure duluth is the same way. i work with a guy who has seen them 7.3s go over a mil easy.

Or Like he said the truck was never in Min. for the winters. but I bet the truck is still in really good shape. Most of theses snowbirds take good care of the trucks, cause they are depending on them to take them back home. So most time the truck is serviced before each trip. atleast.

Stick shift :D

Yeah it appears to have no spent winters in Minnesota, went down to Arizona every winter. I sent him an e-mail, he said he should be able to get me better pictures this weekend, we'll see what she looks like up close and go from there. I'll have to make sure he gets underneath for a few pictures, that's what I want to see.

I don't understand getting caught up on the milage game. I've never based a vehicle purchase decision or price point on milage. It's just not a good indicator of wear and tear. High milage often means lots of highway driving, which can put siginicantly less wear on a vehicle than stop and go driving can. IE - Low milage vehicles. Especially with a Diesel.

Anyhow, if the truck is in the as described shape I would jump on it. With all the problems the latest Navistar (international) Diesel engines are having, Im sure that truck would prove itself to be hella reliable even compared to a brand new truck. I couldn't see paying that price for it around here, but then again our trucks don't rust out in a few years...

The 6.0L and new 6.4L are still made by international (Navistar)
