I am taking my 02 ranger on its longest trip yet from california to kansas. Any thoughts or suggestions on highway 40 (I think that's the right one) great places to eat? Any areas that I should avoid due to construction?

This is the first time I am taking the trip solo also the first time in about 10 years. Landmarks that are a must visit.

My route will be 15 north to 40 east and to the 54 where ever that picks up @. I know the 54 will be th most boring part of the trip.

Where abouts in Kansas are you heading, I'm pretty familiar with the Witchita/Salina area.

I'm a bit confused though, I'm not sure where 54 is, 40 doesn't go through Kansas so I'm assuming it's in Oklahoma somewhere?

Trust me, having driven from LA to Little Rock, there is no WAY any other highway can be more boring than parts of I-40.

Be prepared to be bored. Nothing but flat land on the west side of Oklahoma. When you make it to Sayre, OK, you'll see the wind turbines.

I will be in pratt county, more specific pratt. Wichita I do believe I will be visiting looking at the job market and a couple of houses.

I will be going through sayer that's for sure, I think I should find something fun on the way maybe find a shooting range the break the whole boring drive. Maybe some off road stuff to do. I only have a 2 wheel drive but I have been in some pretty bad situations with it.

As for the boring remarks I know it will be bad, some red bull loud music and the sound of my exhaust should set of some pretty pleasent day dreams.

I am pretty sure its 54 I will be taking into ks from ok. I think its the highway that goes through pratt. I will probably be visiting for 4 days at least. I am putting new shocks, new tires a tune up and oil change before I leave here on hopefully the 5th. Hopefully my squeking idler will last at least till I get there. Look out for me burgandy ranger with a black front end wave if you see me I always check out other rangers.

Still looking for great sites, sights, and good eats I enjoy that perfect spot to eat at.

Actually, I find 54 more interesting than much of I-40 through Texas and Oklahoma. There are not many good places to eat along 54 but the road is not as straight and flat. I find 54 saves me about an hour when going to the Wichita area compared to I-40 and I-35 when the weather cooperates.

Watch out for the area through Flagstaff on I-40. It can get socked in with snow this time of year.

Sorry, I don't have any recommendations of good places to eat or landmarks to see. I usually do it in two days with Albuquerque as the halfway point.

Sorry I am not able quote posts as this is from my phone, for the questions and suggestions I hope that when I answer and respond you get where its aimed at.

As for the snow I am looking forward to it, I love the snow I was living in kansas and tn each stay gave me two winters and te best time to play is in the snow. Rain is ok but snow is my fav.

As for moving I am in hopes of it, but I need to be set before my wife will agree to move with me, a place and a good job.

There is some construction (or at least there was last time I went through a few months ago) on 15 North around the Union/Lycoming line here in PA, but I don't think that concerns you much.

Keep an extra 5 gal in a can, JIC.

The 5 gal can is in the works for the trip, I have some race cans they are actually like 6 gal but that's the plan. Thanks for the suggestion. Yeah I don't think I will be in pa so looks like I am safe on that one.

Also taking some food stuff a huge ice chest, and some tools just enoughr to do basic repairs. I have an extra serp belt as well.

you won't be going through sayre or much of OK at all if you're taking 54...that takes you off of I-40 in Tucumcari, NM and heads northeast into texas and just crosses the OK panhandle through Guymon before going right into KS.

I have family all over Colorado and over the years have experimented with darn near every possible route from here to there, so I'm fairly familiar with the area.

Unfortunately there won't be much to look at.

If you want some more interesting scenery (or maybe try it for the return trip) you might look at taking I-15 all the way to I-70 instead of I-40, that'll take you through some beautiful parts of Utah and Colorado (and Vegas!). According to google maps it's a couple hundred miles further but is estimated at about the same driving time.

I will certainly look into I-70 on the return trip, I would like to see colorado might be nice. I think the biggest thing for this trip is to get out of california for a few days. I lived here most of my life and every chance I get to get away I am on it.

Thanks for the great info everyone. My plans are to go in a couple of days income tax return and gone ( after I buy my frame still need the frame swap the bumper is currently offset to the right.)

Just a warning, we are expecting major winter weather here starting on wed night. Ice and snow, it'll be hitting the panhandle and Kansas 1st

Salina is about an hour north of Wichita on I 135 and you will pick up 70 at that point. I believe there is an WW II air museum out in western KS, but can't remember for sure. If you need a break, I live in Salina and you would be welcome to stop.

I am heading out on the 5th. Should I not travel through at night to avoid ice? If I run the truck into a ditch hopefully there will be people out there that are willing to stop and help unlike california people that just look and move on. They are too afraid of getting there 4X4 dirty to pull someone out, even though I have pulled several people out of the mud.

Anyways onto something new, I am also planning on taking recovery straps along with me just in case.

about salinas that sound good if I am in the area I will stop by and say hello, thanks for the offer.
