tricks to squeeze out a few more MPG?

hmm, i think wal-mart will let me steal some cardboard boxes from the compactor.... gimme a roll of duct tape and 2 hours! ehehe.

ok, heres an idea.. remove the front air dam. you know, the one under the bumper on gen1 rangers. it'll make the front end profile smaller, or is it not worth it and just cause more problems with dirty air going under the truck?

The less air under the truck the better the aerodynamic qualities. Unless you have an under tray.

Have you thought about the benefits of a G-Force chip? Benefits include an up to 60hp increase, up to 30ft/lb. torque increase, and a 4-7 mpg gain in fuel mileage. All of this can be brought to you for under 70 dollars. This just might be the golden ticket.

you can try just driving slower no jack rabbit starts, coast up to red lights, it takes a lot of gas to get your truck rolling again from a dead stop, slowly roll up to red lights and hope they change before you stop completely. I have been doing that for awhile and it seems to help. easier on the brakes anyway. Just my 2 cents worth, plan your trips to get as much done, in a loop so your not going out of your way. Good Luck on a job. It is really rough out there right now, supposed to be getting better??? lol, you can try to scrap metal also offer to clean out garages and basements, the more scrap you haul in the better the price. Just an idea.

yea, i was doing the scrap metal gig for a while and every other hill billy like me was doing it too, the metal pool dried up. good news is i got the job last month, i work at wal-mart in the deli, only down side is its in berryville, 40 miles from home.. 8.15$ an hour helps though.. yea, i dont use brakes that offten and i kill the engine going down hill. plus fixing up the cooling system so the truck isn't get close to over heating in idle anymore helped too..

how is this thread still going haha

just so you and about 8 or so other people can bicker with other people about unrelated stuff...:icon_thumby:

according to this article, i think all of you that were dogging the 5literbeater guy about showing his dyno sheet owe him an apology, he was obviously right when he said a strait pipe was less restrictive over a cat, which should have been obvious to anyone, reguardless of it being illegal or not. Not everyone lives in states where they are required to have emissions on their vehicles, including me, which im glad i do because its less of a pain in the ass and hole in my pocket when things go bad and need replaced on the cheap side. Not trying to spark another argument or bring up an old thread, i found this when i searched for exhaust related issues and ended up reading the thread, its not really that old of a thread anyways, just a couple months lol. But yea, he actually was right.

Reread the last paragraph please

I havent read the whole thread, but if the trucks in question are 4 bangers (should be due to thread placement) 60 HP gain is impossible. I dont mean its highly unlikely, it is literally impossible with a stock 2.3 or 2.5 to get that much extra hp..

It's been proven having the tailgate down causes additional wind drag in the back, as strange as that may seem. Putting a tarp over the top of the bed supposedly may increase your MPG's but I have serious doubts on that one.

+1 on this, i know everyone has access to this one, go to youtube and look up Mythbusters test on this, with the tailgate up the wind circulates in a way that almost acts like a wedge in the bed from the top of the cab to the top of the tailgate and causes the wind to have less effect on the fuel mileage. All the other "gas saver tips" are proven in that segment to be worse than tailgate up.

Another way to get better mileage is to let it breathe. I don't know what your emmisions regulations are where you live but you could try cutting out your cats or at least take a rod and blow em out. You can take your cats to the scrapper and make a few bucks there too. Also free up the muffler. If you can find a cheap one that's high flowing put it on. Or cut yours off if you don't mind the noise. Also mod the stock air box. Cut it up so it breathes better. That should gain a few extra mpg's and a few ponies while you're at it. Good luck

I agree on everything except cutting up the airbox. The air box is designed to bring in only fresh air for the front of the truck, if you cut it up you will get some hot air from post radiator flow. The 2.3 benefits quite a bit from a 2.5 inch exhaust, but if you dont have money a cat and or muffler delete (what ever is legal) will help dramatically. These will bring up HP and mileage a bit. I have quite a few suggestions for the 2.0/2.3/2.5 for fuel mileage, but most of them require a slight or moderate amount of money.
