tricks to squeeze out a few more MPG?

You guys came after me and started arguing with me first. My peak torgue was way lower than that. When I find my sheet I expect an apology. You guys seriously are wrong. Now just stop talking. You don't know. You haven't seen my truck or clearly anything close to it. Don't make comments about it if youve never seen it. I know how to make power. Anybody that has put even just headers on a stock explorer 5.0 would know the gains. Ever seen 4 pipes go through a half inch wide hole? They are very restrictive. Like I said, common sense. Don't think you're smart. It was somewhere around 25-30 HP gain. So once again, stop making claims on what MY truck gained. I would know.

hate to break it to some folks but all diesel trucks did not come with cats.2000 f250 7.3 6spd no cats from the factory.:yahoo:personally i have seen p;ower gains from deleteing the cats on a ranger truck.alot of your new vehicles have high flowing cats that you wont see any difference by removing but we are talking about 20 plus year old trucks:icon_thumby:

My 04 350 has one in line from the factory. I believe they started with the motor change from the 7.3 to the 6.0

This got way off track. I think a MPG sticky thread is needed in this area being people that buy a used 4 cylinder Ranger are probably going to be geared towards MPG not HP & towing.

The reason an older vehicle sees a difference when the cat is removed is because it will be clogged. That's why every few years you have to replace the cat/s. A vehicle gets its best mileage in factory form or closest to it. Diesels are a different animal, what works on one doesn't necessarily work on the other.

Agreed and I second the motion for a MPG sticky

Wouldn't an mpg sticky just be a general maintaining and up keep thread? Unless someone has a magical combination of mods that gets 60 mpg you want to keep it running like mile 1 for the best mpg right?

No, but that would be a main area of focus.

Mile 1 would be a bad example anyways considering vehicles need broke in.

I'm engineering a thread right now.

when you say "i gained about 40 ft lbs," or "somewhere around 25-30 hp gain," it makes you sound like you're guessing, or estimating your claims. if you actually dyno'd it and it showed a 30 or 33 hp gain, or whatever, than i don't think you would forget the exact gain, becasue of how suprising those gains would be.

making estimates about gains after a modification is what we like to call "butt dyno numbers." this, coupled with the placebo effect, is where your numbers are coming from. it feels like 40 ft lbs, but its really 2 ft lbs gain, if that.

plus no one's going to apologize regardless of if you produce the illusive dyno slip you speak of, this is an internet forum for christ's sake haha

just thought of something else referring to the op. if he's cutting off his cats and adding an exhaust and such, the but dyno will say he gained power when he really didnt gain much of anything. then he'll gun it and romp on it all day long to feel this new found power, effectively reducing his truck's efficiency, lowering mpg's

Well to chime in here fellows. You can add and subtract all you want from your trucks. I have an 01 reg cab with a 3.0 5 speed with 254,000 miles on the original motor and trans and simple mods include, K&N, airbox cut open, electric fan, REAR cat gutted, 2 1/2" exhaust out the rear cat with a flowmaster and turn down, and a jet programmer and I get. Guess what? 25.4 mpg hwy and 19-20 in town depending how I drive it. So argue all y'all want when sitting at the pump I'll keep driving right by. This gentleman asked a simple question about trying to make one trip with no gas money not for an ignorant wanna be engineer who's only claim to fame is he has relatives that are engineers. 5 liter beater, you keep doing what you're doing bro. As long as it works for YOU'RE truck that's all that matters. I got your back bro. If all these other assholes know so much then why aren't they design engineers for FORD. Oh I know why. Because if you look back he can't even spell engineer lol!!!

weird how tons of people on this forum with stock 3.0s are putting down damn close to those numbers haha.

seriously if you want a fuel efficient truck get a reg cab duratec 01+. i consistently get 30+ mpg mix driving

To knight,
