Always wanted to spend the summer driving the country, hitting the parks and seeing the sites. What vehicle(s) would be good for this. I don't want to spend many (if any) nights in a hotel so it would be something self sufficient. Not looking at a full size motor home or towing a large trailer (no tents either). It would have to sleep 2 adults and one large dog. It would have to be somewhat maneuverable and fuel efficient as possible. Thinking either a large van conversion (diesel), truck camper, or smaller vehicle pulling a small trailer. I really do not want tow anything and would rather pull into a spot, throw it in park and go to sleep. What have U guys got for me?

I'm also thinking Econoline is the best fit. Get a 15 passenger or cargo unit, pull the rear set up, seats, racks, etc. Then put an air mattress and a power converter in it and go.

I also talked to a guy who said he bought an old school bus, stripped the seats out, and got 20 MPG. Got it reclassed as a pickup.

I really liked my GMC Vandura 2500 for this. Bed in the back, tv, easily could have added simple little comforts. I used it for camping all the time and loved it!

Awesome fellas...keep em coming. School bus that gets 20mpg!? Hmmm not sure the wife would go for that but I like it.

Dude, if you had any fab or construction skills you could build a house in that thing.

I used to work with a guy who had a really nice 5th-wheel travel trailer from when he used to do desert racing. I even saw the photo album from when he was building it. He started with just a rolling stock frame. When he was done it had a "garage" at the rear just a bit longer than his car and the front 2/3 of the trailer was a living area, kitchen/dining/living room, bedroom and 3/4 bath. No joke man, this thing was nicer than my first 3 apartments.

I have a 2012 Ford Expedition EL (the long version) because I like to take random roadtrips. I'm 6'2" and have more than enough room to stretch out and sleep in it. I actually got rid of my F-150 for the Expedition just so I can sleep in it.

A fullsize truck or SUV isn't the best vehicle for fuel mileage.

This may seem like a weird suggestion, but I use to have a Chrysler Town & Country mini van, and there was enough room in the back to carry 4x8 sheets of plywood. Plus, the get better fuel mileage.

My Dad had a chevy van conversion that he used to travel in. He drove it all over the US. Pulled down 18 mpg under normal conditions. Had a porta-potti, Sink Fridge. Worked out great for him. He even took two of my kids with him on a long trip.

Uhhh...NO. I used to think that too. U aren't married are U. I'd be traveling alone if I pulled that lol, or I'd be living in it!

Nope, not yet.. I am starting to question how much control I really have in my relationship though... :dunno: so maybe you're right!
