If you didn't build it; it's not really yours
So I swapped in another TK5 in my daughter's ranger. It works great and only cost me $200 but now the speedo reads high about 11% or so. I used the same cable and gear. I know I can get change the gear on the cable to compensate but someone told I could just swap out the gear in the tail end of the transmission for the one in the old tranny. Is this the case or would it be easier / cheaper just to find another speedo gear with the correct number of teeth? If so, where can I get one?
TIA,
Jim

I haven't done it on any of the transmissions that came in Rangers; but swapping the speedo drive gear isn't too big of a job on three or four speed transmissions.

I would pull the tailshaft housing off the old tranny and see how hard it looks, and if you can get the gear off, before trying the one that is installed in the truck.

I just swapped trannys in my f-150, a m5od-r2. I'm having the same problem. I took a quick look, and it seems there is a small, easily removable piece that the speedo cable wire plug end goes into. I think if I swap that out I'll fix the issue. It may be the same on yours.
good luck,

Richard

Yeah That was going to be my plan unless I can justchange out the plastic gear on the end of the speedo cable. When I had this issue in my mustang I just changed the one plastic gear.

Just a follow-up. I was able to change the speedo gear and I got it pretty close.
My MPG sure took a dump though...:(
