1998 Ford Ranger XLT 4x4 V6 4.o

No Drive but Park, reverse, 1 and 2 work just fine. My question is how much will it cost to repair and should I just repair what broke in the transmission or should I just do a whole rebuilt? Truck has about 200K miles.

Also I need to get this cleared. Is the problem a bad Sprag or Overdrive band? Or am I completely wrong....

With that many miles, spending the cost of a 'repair' is not a lot less than doing a re-build. The labor is the difference, plus any 'hard' parts. If I were doing the work, it is a bit different, but if I am paying someone, then I'd have them go through and replace the clutches & steels, thrust washers, O-rings, and clutch pack seals. Check & replace bands as necessary. Most times, the clutch pack seals get hard and start to allow the clutch to slip, heat rises, and rinse repeat until the clutches won't grab at all. The "slow to engage" becomes the No to engage.

1998 Ranger with 4.0l engine could either have a 4R55E 4-speed or a 5R55E 5-speed, depends on where it was built.

Open drivers door and there will be a label on the doors edge
At the bottom of the label you will see TRANS, look at the Letter under it
T = 4R55E
D = 5R55E

These are not interchangeable because the computer in the truck is programmed for one or the other.

So find out what you have first.

I would plan on removing the transmission, for you to inspect or repair, or to swap it out if you are in a hurry then repair and sell it to off set cost of the other trans.
New torque converter always.

4R or 5R 44E were for 2.3l or 3.0l engines and will not fit on a 4.0l engine, 55E were all for the 4.0l
It also needs to be 4X4 model to work with your truck

Thanks for the information guy I will be looking into rebuilding the trans.

Also I drove the truck this morning and apparently D and 1st don't seem to engage unless I drive on 2nd get enough speed then shift to drive...
