So i just bought a 89 2.3L 2wd ranger with a 3.45 rear end from my friend. we replaced the engine and tranny last year with a new engine and (not knowing at the time) different tranny. The old one from what i can tell is a M50d-r1. The new tranny came out of an 83 ranger but it too looks like the m50d-r1. the gear ratios seem to be dramatically different. You really have to be going 55mph before you can shift into 5th with any success. The gears are much longer than what they used to be. I cannot find any Id on the new tranny to confirm that it is a M50d-r1. So my question is where do i look for identification and is it possible that the their are variations of the M50d-r1 that have different ratios? Thanks

Search the tech library......
Im not gonna do it for ya.

i did search there but i did not see different 5th gear ratios for the m50d-r1, could it have been a mustang transmission? what what i can tell by looking under the truck and look at the old tranny is that they are the same.

Oh i apologize. I thought you were asking how to tell which transmission you had.
Sorry.
Did you try google'n difference between ranger and mustang _____ transmissions?
Thats where id start.

no problem:) i think it may just may take some digging. Its just difficult to tell what it the truck now. they appear to be identical but the gears are so long in the new one. Are there id tags on them? whats the "normal" rpm's for a M50d r1 equipped ranger with a 3.45 at 55mph in 5th gear?

Is it possible that the new transmission has the wrong speedo drive gear in it. If that's the case you would be going faster than indicated. It would give the impression of having longer legs.

hmmm thats a thought, ill have get my gps out and check it

All m5od-r1 trannies have the same 4th and 5th. And the only M5od-r1 that has different 1, 2, and 3 is the 4.0 version that wont even bolt up to your motor.

Pull the speedo drives and see if both transmissions have the same color drive gears or not.

well i gps verified the speedo. the speedo and the gps matched all the way up to 65mph. sooo... i the mystery remains lol

ok boys and girls i got numbers off of the tags on the trannies and they are as follows.
The old one: E97A DA
The new one: E87A EF

as i said earlier the new one has forever long gears compared to the old one, so im just trying to find the difference between them and learn what it originally was used in( i got it out of an 83 2.0 ranger, but who's to say that that was the original... it was a parts truck that has since been disposed of)

They never put an m5od-r1 behind a 2.0
