Ok so beginning december my transmission started making noises and I pulled it and replaced the broken parts and put in all new bearings and stuff. I just got it done and running a few days ago but haven't driven it that much due to the fact it is making a high pitched noise when it is spinning or the clutch is out or what ever. It is a TK5 from an 84' with 4x4 and a 2.8L. It is only really noticeable at an Idle and sounds somewhat normal when driving it.

Sounds Like this but alot quieter.

did you do the work or was it done by a shop?
Does it do it in 4th gear?

I did the work because we only have one shop and they are not very good, last person I knew to get a transmission rebuilt had to buy a new one and the dealership said the work the certified shop did voided the warrenty because they just hacked it to pieces.

I think it goes up to 4th.

I know what you mean. When mine went out, the shop wanted $600 to rebuild it. Took 2 months to find replacement and it was bad. So had 2 bad ones, made 1 good one.

The main shaft rides inside the input shaft on a needle bearing. In all gears except 4th it is spinning, in 4th the input shaft and mainshaft are locked together. You said you replaced bearings, Did you also replace that one.

I had a problem that when I put the reverse/5th gears on the mainshaft , the mainshaft didn't pull up tight and had about an eighth of an inch play. I found this out after I had to repull the tranny. It made a whining sound. I'll get some pics of how to make sure you get all the play out of it. It will be easier to show than explain.

The tech library has an exploded view of the TK5.

Here's a pic of the TK5 disassembled.

My tranny does the same thing and I'm very interested in how to fix it but am still a little stumped, how long can I run my tranny like this,I was thinking of getting another and just letting this on go till she dies.It is a m5od out of a '92 3 litre will this be the same fix?

If it does not do it in 4th gear. The needle bearing is the only bearing not spinning in 4th gear.
As for how long you can run, it could last a long time or it could break the pieces could damage the other gears and bearings and leave you on the side of the road.

What type of fluid did you put in it?

I put Napa 80-85-90w gear oil. Thats what i've always put in it. And yes I replaced the needle bearing in the 4th gear main shaft, that gear and the shaft with it was what i originally pulled it out because of the broken teeth. So that and the bearings and gaskets are all new. So maybe because that is the only new gear in the transmission it is not worn in with the other gears? Your talking about the one in your picture with the input shaft and bearing on it and the needle bearing behind it right?

Yeah, that's the one. I was going to suggest that it might just be gear noise. I'd say just drive it careful like for awhile and see if the noisee changes. Could also be rebuild jitters, when I got mine back together I was hearing all kinds of things. I was listening so hard I could have heard a gnat fart.
