I have a 2001 Ranger 4.0L 4X4 with a M50D-R1HD. A few years ago, I broke the 2nd gear in my transmission. I could probably rebuild it but it has 180,000 miles and Im sure the other gears are just as tired. Ive been trying to find a replacement but everywhere I go, I get asked what my input shaft size is. All the Pick N Pull places I go tell me there are three different sizes of input shaft. I called up Ford to get this info but they dont know what the heck I am talking about. Have any of you ran into this problem before?

Im looking for an entire transmission, not just the input shaft.

I just got off the phone with the Pick N Pull guy and he gave me the three different input shafts that he sees in his computer

1L54-HB
1L54-MA
F87A-FA

I have tried to pull these up in the ol' google machine and noting comes back in relationship to a M50D-R1HD ranger transmission.

When I called Ford yesterday, I didn't have these pick N pull numbers so Ill try them again and see what they say. (Getting a replacement transmission shouldn't be this hard!!)

Maybe the "J" makes the difference? RE tech pages here on the site

Mazda M50D-R1HD J 2001 & Up 4.0L SOHC Ranger 5-Speed

What's your VIN?

The transmission your truck left the factory with was the 1L54-HB.

Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!

How did you find that out? I couldn't even get Ford to tell me that info

I have some access to Ford's system. With a VIN I can pull up the factory build sheets and see the part numbers for what a vehicle was supposed to roll off the line with.

Okay, it has me wondering an asking a dumb question, why are there different input shafts? My guess is because of different engines other than 4.0?

Beats me.

Bunch of young, "green" engineers running amok with little or no adult supervision over many years if vehicle development?
