I have 04 fx4 level 2 with 4.0 I believe it has 1354 transfer case?
problem I am having is it’s leaking transmission fluid from what I can tell around that adapter between the transmission & transfer case.
The bottom two bolts on the adapter where just a little lose. I tightened them up and it slowed it down but still leaking pretty good.
What seal or where would this oil be coming from? And is it a seal that can be changed by pulling the transfer case?
also we been adding oil to the transmission of course so it possibly the rear tranny seal maybe? Hopefully it can be changed externally by pulling the transfer case?
Never checked transfer case oil, so it’s obviously the transmission leaking the oil. Thanks for any help.

How did this go for you (since it has been over two months since first posting)? I have a 2009 FX4 4x4.

Just this past week, I pulled my transfer case and extension housing to see where my leak was coming from. The gasket between the transmission and extension housing was destroyed and in pieces. I also broke the housing by hitting a hammer on it to try and break it free. It turns out that the upper left stud that the housing screws onto is a two nut design. One nut to hold a thin bracket and then the nut behind it to hold the housing. (it was late and dark and I didn't take my time to feel for another nut).

Also, on the bell housing, the hole for the pawl stud was cracked and that made me lose the pawl functionality. I don't know if that broken piece caused the gasket to wear away - I doubt it - but losing the pawl was a few months before the gasket.

Also, my extension housing is the cylinder and not the cone, if that helps you.

Actually my gasket was good. It ended up being the back part of the transmission. on the top two bolts for the adapter between the transmission and transfer case.
So I got them putting a different transmission in it 😡
Good luck with yours
