So, I’m getting annoyed with this and I’d like to do something about it…

My green Ranger got a 5.0 AWD swap, so I unplugged the 4x4 transfer case wires and just put a junkyard plug in that I turned into a capped off plug to keep dirt out since the Explorer AWD case doesn’t have any electrical. Well… I get this…

P1891 - Transfer Case Contact Plate Ground Return Open Circuit
P1867 - Transfer Case Contact Plate General Circuit Failure

My next thought was maybe I just need to figure out what wire needs grounded and that will make the module happy. Poked around in my EVTM and I’m not sure what I would need to do to make this thing happy. I don’t see anything that says anything about the contact plate ground unless they are talking about what the book calls a “Touch Drive Return” (YE/WH) wire. Maybe someone knows more about this than me?

A 2wd GEM should solve your problem.

I know on the AWD Explorers that there were 2 different GEMs. There was a 4WD and a 2WD/AWD. I swapped out my 4WD one with a 2WD one on my ‘95 Ex when I swapped in the manual T-case.

Wonder if the GEM on my donor would plug in…
