Trans swap

Needing a replacement trans for my 93. Mine has a cable driven speedo cable (m5od ) ,what year was it changed to wire? Are old and new interchangeable?

1997 was the last year of gear driven transmission speedo hook up, on 2WD
4WD had it on transfer case, and you don't need to swap transfer case when swapping trans

In 1995 the dash got electric speedo but it was still a gear driven VSS on the 2WD trans until 1997, in 1998 VSS for ABS on rear axle was used, so no 2WD trans hook up

M5OD has integrated bellhousing so trans must be from/for same engine as yours, none of the Ranger M5OD transmissions are interchangeable in that respect, except 2.9l and 4.0l

A little tardy to the party but I took a transmission out of a 98 explorer sport 2wd to go into my 94, everything went good and still does, the tail section had to be swapped over to get my speedo, the output shaft has the detent ball location and snap ring locations still on it so no real modification was done.
