got my tranny all unhooked an everything then go to drop it down an it slid off about an inch, i can see my flywheel but the thing wont come off anymore ! i been tryin to get it off for bout an hour now ha, some trick to this?

disconnect everything

Usually have to come STRAIGHT off, any weight on the input shaft will hang it up.
Manual or auto?

if you don't have a body lift, you will have to either remove the y-pipe or cut it off. The transmission won't come off with the y-pipe on it.

I love when people make it sound like it's impossible to take it out with the y-pipe installed. If i'm at a junkyard then sure i'll cut the y-pipe out of the way and toss it but if i'm installing a manual trans in a v6 RBV the only way i'll remove it is if it looks like the exhaust is fairly new enough to come apart with ease. It IS possible to leave it in there and still get the transmission out even if your truck doesn't have a body lift but it's not the easiest task in the world.

getting it out is possible, but getting it back in is absolutely impossible to get a M50D into a Gen 1 & 2 Ranger, Bronco II, or a Gen 1 Explorer

Sorry, but i have to disagree. I've removed/installed many m5od's, fm145/146's, and a4ld's in gen1/2 Rangers, B2's, and gen1 Exploders without having to remove the y-pipe. (though it does take SOME patience) And no, they did not all have bodylifts.

The only truck i've ever had to remove the y-pipe from was a '94 B3000 2wd with an m5od because the bellhousing bolt pattern would not allow me to "rotate" the transmission to clear the y-pipe.

I agree with dennis461's statement that the tranny may be hanging up because of being supported on the input shaft.

I agree, I've done more RBV trannys than I can count, A4LDs, M5ODs, TK5s, FM145s and FM146s on 2.8s, 2.9s, 2.3s, and 4.0s, on 1st and 2nd gens, never had to remove the y-pipe (of coarse there's no y-pipe on the 2.3).

well got er out without removin no exhuast or anything just kinda worked out, getting it back in tomorrow is prolly gonna be a different story it doesnt look to good to put back.

I've dropped the FM in my 88 3 times with the exhaust totally intact. Installation goes the same way, with some wiggling.

I've had mine out a few times and always removed the Y-pipe. That's a 4.0, so I don't know if it's any different, but the 4.0 has the cast aluminum pan and it blocks it pretty well. I realize I'm probably a pussy, but I pull the tranny and t-case out together without difficulty.

Pulling the y-pipe will help no question, problem is, I don't want to deal with the rusty ass bolts, on my rig I actually installed the y-pipe after I put the 4.0 in before I put the tranny simply because I didn't want to deal with the bolts while the tranny was in. I also pull the tranny and t-case as one most of the time.

I usually remove the transfer case just to give a little more "wiggle" room while removing/installing the transmission. (it also saves a little weight if you are doing it on your own while laying in the driveway)

And i wouldn't even consider installation with the t/case as part of the transmission.........

Well on a B2 it isn't really a problem since the gas tank is out back, in the sploder sport I disassembled I removed the t-case since there was 6 inches of room before it hit the gas tank. I'm usually working with my dad so with 2 people it really isn't a big deal to do the t-case and tranny as one.

this may sound stupid but did u unbolt the torque converter cause that sounds like what the problem is

i dont have a torque converter lol an got a new problem i got my clutch kit that came with disc, pressure plate, pilot , and release bearing, got one question the release bearing has somthing to do with the slave cylinder right ? the slave cylinder isnt the thing on the outside with two bolts is it? (4speedtranny) cause how does a bearing incorporate in that? my haynes has a pic of it an its nonexistant in my tranny lol ill take a few pics
