Ok so we picked up a 96 Explorer control trac 4wd with I believe a 4r55e. Did a full tune up which included tranny filter and fluid. Not a flush.

Now transmissions are not my strong point. I've swapped manuals and replaced several clutches, but anything internal I have not messed with. Add the fact that its an auto and computer controlled and I'm lost.

After changing the filter and adding about 4 quarts to relplace what was lost, it would shift until the end of the neighborhood then stay in first gear. Apparently I didn't use the new hardware on the filter. I didn't know it was there until I had it back together, but I read the old hardware will cause it to suck air. So I dropped the pan again and swapped the new bolt on the filter. Filled it back up and now it wont shift out of first at all.

The only other thing I messed with was the transfer case. I swapped in a manual. Didn't think unplugging the shift motor would cause any issues.

any suggestions or anyone willing to help out would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks.

Do you have a part number for the filter? A 2wd transmission uses a shallower pan than a 4wd, and therefore the filters are different. Maybe you got a filter for a 2wd that doesn't reach down far enough to suck fluid. Also, you remembered to install the new o-rings right?

I don't have the part number off hand, but I knew the 4x4 used the deep pan. That's what I asked for.

And yes the o rings are on, and I made sure the old ones weren't stuck in the tranny.

Just making sure here; but you did check the fluid, while in neutral and up to temp, that it was within the proper range?

Yes, but it was in park. That's what I was told.

Does the new transfercase and the old one share the same speed sensor? If not what did you do to make the speedo work? That could be the problem.

I swapped the vss from the old one. Speedo didnt work before so I know its not that.

Not at all other than the socket size. The old one was a 10mm and the new one was an 8mm.

Well that makes sense. Sounds like you just need a new solenoid, or maybe you knocked the wire loose when you had the pan off. The solenoids are right in the valve body. Just drop the pan (again) and they're right there.

When you put the new transfercase on did you use RTV between the case and transmission? You may have a ground problem.

Yes, but there is nothing grounded to the tcase.

Swapped solenoid. Still doesn't shift. Stays in first and no codes are being thrown now.
