It may have grounded through the transfercase electrical connector plug. Just for kicks ground it out to see what happens.

There is nothing plugged into the transfer case other than the VSS.
Tried adjust the intermediate band and the screw went all the way in. Broken band. Odd there was nothing in the pan.

Ok you installed a manual transfercase right? You took an electric out. Therefore the case was grounded through the electrical connector that supplied power to the old case. That is where I was going with the problem. I have run into that many of times and I tend to learn more everytime I get into these problems.
Yeah sometimes the metal part of the band breaks and it shows nothing in the pan.
